How to Make Arrowheads
If you’re a DIY enthusiast or an aspiring archer, you’ll appreciate the skill it takes to make arrowheads. This ancient art has been passed down through generations, and with the right tools, patience, and practice, it’s something you can learn too! Here are 14 comprehensive steps to make your own arrowheads.
1. Gather the materials: Common materials for making arrowheads include flint, obsidian, and chert. Choose one of these materials based on availability and desired look.
2. Safety first: Before starting, ensure that you have safety goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands from flying debris.
3. Prepare your tools: You’ll need a hammerstone, pressure flaker, leather pad, and possibly an abrading stone.
4. Find a suitable piece of rock: Look for rocks with few cracks or impurities that are large enough to work on but small enough for intricate shaping.
5. Create a spall: Using the hammerstone, strike the edge of the rock at a downward angle to remove a spall (a thin piece of material used to create the arrowhead).
6. Shape the spall into a rough preform: With gentle taps from the hammerstone, shape the piece into a rough triangular form that will become your arrowhead.
7. Establish a centerline: To create symmetry in your arrowhead, there should be a center ridge running down its length – use an abrading stone or rubbing strokes with a harder rock to slightly shape this ridge.
8. Pressure flaking with notches: Using the pressure flaker and leather pad for support, create small notches by pressing near the centerline ridge. This is done by applying consistent downward pressure along the preform’s edges to remove small flakes while maintaining the arrowhead’s shape.
9. Start sharpening edges: Continue working around all the edges of the preform to sharpen it.
10. Refine the arrowhead shape: Work carefully and progressively by applying pressure to create finer notches and ultimately produce a sharp point.
11. Create the hafting area: Near the base of the arrowhead, create notches where you can attach it to a shaft. The hafting area should provide enough room for bindings, such as sinew threads or plant fibers.
12. Polish your arrowhead: Using a very fine abrading stone or piece of leather, buff and smooth the surface to finish it.
13. Secure arrowhead onto shaft: Attach your finished arrowhead to an appropriate shaft with a strong adhesive, such as pine pitch or a modern epoxy.
14. Bind arrowhead to shaft: Finally, use sinew thread or plant fibers (or modern string) to bind the hafting area securely in place.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully made your arrowhead. With practice and patience, you’ll develop this primitive skill and appreciate the artistry behind ancient hunting and warfare techniques.
