Step 1: Choose the Right Paper
Select a suitable piece of origami paper for your giraffe. A single-colored square piece of paper around 6″ x 6″ in size is perfect, though larger sizes may be more comfortable for beginners. The color should ideally resemble a giraffe’s natural hues, such as yellow or light brown.
Step 2: Create a Bird Base
To begin making the bird base, fold the paper diagonally to create a triangle, then unfold. Repeat the diagonal fold in the opposite direction. Fold horizontally and vertically, making sure to unfold after each fold. Now take each corner and fold it towards the center. After all four corners are folded in, fold the two diagonal creases that intersect at the center to create a triangle flap, creating a smaller square. Turn the paper over and repeat this process on the other side.
Step 3: Shape the Head and Neck
Fold one layer of the small square toward one of its sides on both sides of your model. Then, open up these two flaps and shape them into a taller, narrower neck with an open end up top so that they can stand straight up giving you a long, slender neck shape.
Step 4: Shape the Ears and Horns
Instead of leaving the neck open-ended, fold down one side’s flap so as not to touch the edge within itself (this will form our giraffe’s ear). Repeat with the other side for two identical ears. To make horns (also known as “ossicones”), make two small pinch folds above each ear.
Step 5: Fold an Inside Reverse Fold for Giraffe’s Snout
Slightly below where you have folded ears, make an inside reverse-fold along with your model’s front flaps (it will look like an elongated triangle). This will create a downward-pointing snout which will be your giraffe’s head and face.
Step 6: Make the Legs
Return to the previous triangle flaps at the base of the neck, folded towards the model’s sides in step 3. Fold them back outwards, creating legs that are perpendicular to the body. To form a bend in each leg (like a knee), make another inside reverse fold towards the middle of each leg.
Step 7: Create a Tail
Take what remains of your bird base’s dangling flap and create a slender tail by folding it upwards with another inside reverse fold. Crease at an angle according to your preference, representing a realistic giraffe tail.
Step 8: Complete Your Origami Giraffe
Once your legs, tail, and horns have been mastered, your origami giraffe is complete! Stand up your model proudly on its four legs – you just crafted an elegant giraffe from a single piece of paper!
