How to Make an Origami Elephant
Introduction
Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, has been practiced for centuries. It can transform a single sheet of paper into beautiful creations that delight both the creator and the observer. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to make an origami elephant.
What You’ll Need:
– A square sheet of origami paper, preferably 6×6 inches or larger
– A flat surface to work on
– Patience and a sense of fun!
Steps to Make an Origami Elephant:
1. Prepare your workspace: Clear a flat surface and ensure you have ample space for folding.
2. Start with the color side face down: Place your origami paper on the table with the color side facing down and the white side facing you.
3. Fold diagonally: Fold the paper diagonally, bringing one corner to meet the opposite corner, creating a triangle. Press firmly along the folded edge. Unfold it back to a square.
4. Fold diagonally again: This time fold the other two corners together to form another triangle. Unfold it once more to return to a square shape; you should now have an “X” shape created by the crease lines.
5. Squash-fold: Bring all four corners of the square together towards the center, collapsing along the diagonal creases. Flatten out your paper into a smaller square called a “preliminary base.”
6. Make a kite base: Fold both sides of the top layer toward the centerline and fold down top triangle as shown below.
7. Divide in half: Take your folded triangle at the top and fold it halfway back up along its long midline crease.
8. Forming legs: Fold both bottom corners upwards at an angle as shown below; these will become your elephant’s front legs.
9. Reverse-fold: On both sides, tuck the elongated triangular flap inwards along the existing crease.
10. Folding the tail: Fold the extended triangle (the future tail) to the left or right.
11. Reverse-fold the tail: Next, reverse-fold along an angle to make the tail pointing upwards.
12. Shaping the head: Fold down the top point of paper which will become your Origami Elephant’s head.
13. Finishing touches: Add a little personality by curving and shaping your elephant’s trunk and legs.
Congratulations! Your origami elephant is now complete. Enjoy your paper creation or give it as a special, handmade gift to someone you care about. Practice different sizes and colors of paper to create your own origami elephant family. Happy folding!
