An eyepatch can be a practical solution for those who need to cover an injured eye or a fun accessory for Halloween costumes and pirate-themed parties. Regardless of the purpose, making a comfortable and functional eyepatch can be quite simple. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide on how to make an eyepatch in 11 steps.
1. Gather materials: You’ll need fabric or felt, a flexible measuring tape, scissors, a needle and thread or sewing machine, elastic band or ribbon, a pen or tailor’s chalk, and pins.
2. Measure your eye: Using the flexible measuring tape, measure from one edge of your eyebrow to the other, just below your eye. Add about 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) to this measurement for seam allowance.
3. Create a template: Draw a slightly oval shape on paper using the measurement you took previously. Cut out the template and ensure it comfortably covers your eye.
4. Choose fabric or felt: Select comfortable and durable materials for both the outer part (decorative layer) and inner part (touching your skin). If you’re creating a costume piece, remember to consider aesthetics as well.
5. Cut out two fabric pieces: Trace the template onto your chosen fabrics and cut one piece from each material.
6. Align fabric pieces: If you have designs on the outer fabric piece, make sure it’s facing outward before placing the two pieces together with the right sides facing inwards (the design will be hidden at this point).
7. Secure fabric layers: Pin in place along the edge of the template.
8. Sew around the edges: With needle and thread or sewing machine, sew around the edges of your pieces with about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) seam allowance, leaving an opening for turning it inside out.
9. Turn it right-side out: Carefully turn the eyepatch right-side out through the opening, making sure not to tear any seams.
10. Attach elastic or ribbon: Measure your head circumference and cut the proper length of elastic or ribbon. Sew both ends securely to the sides of the eyepatch, either on the outer or inner fabric layer as preferred.
11. Close the opening: Use a ladder stitch to invisibly close the opening of your eyepatch.
Now you have a custom-made eyepatch! Feel free to embellish it with beads, embroidery, or any other creative decorations. There you have it – you’re all set to be a pirate in style or support an injured eye with ease.
