How to Make an Easy Kite
Introduction:
Kites have been a source of entertainment for centuries, bringing joy to both children and adults. Making a kite at home is an easy, fun, and inexpensive activity that you can do with your kids. In this article, we will provide you a step-by-step guide on how to make a simple kite with materials easily found around the house.
Materials Needed:
– A sheet of lightweight paper or plastic (A4 size or larger)
– Two thin wooden dowels or bamboo sticks (one longer than the other)
– Scissors
– Tape (duct tape or masking tape)
– String
– A ruler
– A marker pen
Step 1: Prepare the Frame
Take the two dowels (or bamboo sticks) and place them in a cross shape with the longer dowel in the vertical position and the shorter one horizontally. The horizontal stick should be placed about one-third from the top of the longer stick. Use tape to secure their intersection.
Step 2: Cut Out the Kite Shape
Place the frame on the sheet of paper or plastic. You should have at least 1 inch of margin around the entire frame. Use a ruler to help create straight edges and draw a shape that looks like a diamond with its upper point slightly above where the sticks meet. Once you have drawn your kite shape, cut it out using scissors.
Step 3: Attach Frame to Kite Body
Lay your kite’s body (paper or plastic) on a flat surface, then attach your frame by taping it securely to the centerline of each edge of your kite material. Ensure that you cover all edges of your frame to prevent any injuries when flying your kite.
Step 4: Attach String Bridle
Cut three pieces of string – two around 12 inches long and another one approximately 24 inches long. Tie one end of each of the shorter strings to the top and bottom ends of the vertical dowel. Next, tie the other ends of both strings to the middle of the longer string, leaving about 8 inches on each side. This creates a bridle, which will allow you to control your kite.
Step 5: Make a Reel
To make the reel for your kite, find a sturdy stick or an empty spool from some thread or ribbon. Tie one end of a long piece of string to the reel, then wind the string around it. The other end of this string should be attached to the center point of your kite’s bridle, leaving some slack.
Step 6: Add a Tail
A long streamer tail can be made using crepe paper or strips of plastic bags. Attach one end of the tail to the bottom tip of your kite, using tape or tying it on with string. A tail provides additional stability and ensures that your kite flies smoothly.
Step 7: Fly Your Kite
Take advantage of a nice windy day and head to an open area with little obstruction, such as a park or field. Hold onto your reel and let out some string while someone else holds your kite into the breeze. As the wind catches it, continue releasing more string while guiding your kite upward.
Conclusion:
Making an easy kite from scratch can be an enjoyable and rewarding project for all ages. Customize your design by adding colorful patterns or shapes before assembly, then enjoy hours of fun outside with your creation. With these simple steps, you’ll have a homemade kite that flies high in no time!
