How to Make Almond Milk Yogurt: 7 Steps
Homemade almond milk yogurt is a delicious and healthy alternative to conventional dairy-based yogurt. It’s perfect for vegans, lactose-intolerant individuals, or simply if you’re looking for a lighter and healthier option. Making almond milk yogurt at home is surprisingly easy, and only requires a few ingredients. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making your own almond milk yogurt in 7 simple steps.
1. Gather your ingredients and equipment:
To make almond milk yogurt, you will need the following ingredients:
– 4 cups of unsweetened almond milk
– 2 tablespoons of sweetener (optional)
– 1/4 cup of unsweetened plain yogurt with active live cultures, or dairy-free yogurt starter
You will also need the following equipment:
– A saucepan
– A thermometer
– A whisk
– A glass jar or container
2. Heat the almond milk:
Pour the almond milk into a saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it reaches a temperature between 110°F and 115°F (43°C and 46°C). Keep an eye on the thermometer to ensure that the almond milk doesn’t get too hot.
3. Add the sweetener (optional):
If you’d like to sweeten your yogurt, add your preferred sweetener at this point – honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup work well. Whisk the mixture until everything is fully combined.
4. Cool the mixture:
Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the almond milk mixture to cool down to around 100°F (38°C). This is an essential step because adding live cultures at high temperatures can kill them, preventing fermentation.
5. Add your chosen starter:
Once cooled, add your unsweetened plain yogurt with active live cultures or dairy-free yogurt starter to the almond milk mixture. Whisk until the starter is completely incorporated.
6. Pour the mixture into a container:
Carefully pour the almond milk mixture into a clean, glass container – preferably one with a lid. Seal the container tightly to keep the heat and moisture inside.
7. Ferment the yogurt:
Place your sealed container in a warm, dark place and allow it to ferment for at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours, depending on how tangy you want your yogurt. A good spot to ferment your yogurt is the oven with the light turned on for warmth or wrapped in a thick towel. After fermentation is complete, refrigerate for at least 4 hours to thicken.
Once chilled, your homemade almond milk yogurt is ready to enjoy! You can add fruit, granola, or other toppings as desired, or simply savor its delicious flavor on its own.
