How to Make a Wrap Dress
Introduction:
Wrap dresses are versatile, stylish, and universally flattering. They can be dressed up or down, making them a staple item in any wardrobe. In this article, we will walk you through the process of making your own wrap dress from start to finish. With some basic sewing skills and the right materials, you will soon have a beautiful, custom-made wrap dress that you can wear with pride.
Materials:
– Fabric of your choice (around 4 yards)
– Matching thread
– Sewing machine
– Fabric scissors
– Pins
– Measuring tape
– Pattern paper (optional)
– Template or existing dress for reference
Step 1: Choose and Prepare Your Fabric
Select a fabric that drapes well and complements the style you want for your wrap dress. Jersey knit, silk, rayon, and lightweight cotton blends are popular choices. Wash, dry, and iron your fabric according to its care instructions before beginning.
Step 2: Measure Yourself
Take measurements for your bust, waist, hips, and dress length (from the nape of your neck to the desired hemline). Write these down as they will guide you during the pattern-making process.
Step 3: Create Your Dress Pattern or Use an Existing Template
If using a template or existing dress for reference: Lay it flat on your pattern paper or directly onto your fabric if you feel confident enough. Trace around it, leaving a 5/8-inch seam allowance. Separate front and back bodice patterns by tracing only half of each side.
If creating a pattern from scratch: Following your measurements and adding seam allowances where needed, draw half of the bodice (front and back) directly onto your pattern paper. Add curves for the neckline and underbust/waist area.
Step 4: Cut Your Pieces Out
When you’ve got your parts traced onto fabric/pattern paper, cut them out carefully. Keep in mind that you’ll need two mirrored front pieces (for the wrap) and one back piece for your dress. You’ll also need two strap pieces, which can be cut in a strip, about 2-3 inches wide and as long as you’d like them to wrap around.
Step 5: Assemble Your Dress
Now it’s time to sew the pieces together! Begin by stitching the shoulder seams of the back and two front bodice pieces. Proceed by attaching the straps to the edges of your neckline on each front piece. Depending on your design, you may choose to hem the neckline or narrow hem the entire wrap dress edge.
Step 6: Construct the Skirt
The skirt section of your wrap dress is created by cutting two mirrored rectangles equal to your waist measurement (plus allowances) for width and desired length for height. Sew one edge of each rectangle along each bottom side of the bodice’s front section.
Step 7: Add Ties or Fastenings
Attach a tie or other fastening mechanisms to each side of the waist on your dress – one to secure inside and another that will wrap around and come through a slit on the opposite side. Ensure they are long enough to wrap around your waist comfortably.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
Hem the bottom edge of your dress using a straight stitch or other desirable finishing methods. Make any required final adjustments to achieve a more personalized fit.
Voila! You’ve successfully made a beautiful custom wrap dress that combines comfort, style, and versatility. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and embellishments as you become more confident in making your own dresses. Enjoy showing off your new creation!
