How to Make a Tutu: 14 Steps
A tutu is a fun and whimsical addition to any costume, dance recital, or just for everyday dress-up play. Making your own tutu at home is easier than you might think! Follow these 14 simple steps and you’ll be twirling around in your handmade skirt in no time.
1. Gather materials: You will need tulle (in the color(s) of your choice), scissors, elastic, measuring tape, and a needle and thread or sewing machine.
2. Measure the waist: Use the measuring tape to measure the waist size of the person who will wear the tutu. Add an extra inch for seam allowance.
3. Cut elastic: Cut your elastic to match the measured waist size plus one inch for seam allowance.
4. Sew elastic ends together: Connect the two ends of the elastic by overlapping them by one inch and sewing them together with a zigzag stitch using a sewing machine or needle and thread.
5. Measure tulle length: Decide how long you want your tutu to be and double that length when measuring out your tulle strips.
6. Cut tulle into strips: Cut tulle into strips that are twice the desired length and about 4 inches wide.
7. Fold tulle strip in half: Take one strip of tulle and fold it in half, creating a loop at the top.
8. Attach tulle to elastic: Slip the looped end of the tulle strip under your elastic waistband, then pull the free ends through the loop to create a knot around the elastic band—making sure not to pull too tight.
9. Repeat attaching process: Continue attaching strips of tulle around the entire elastic waistband, spacing them close together for a full and fluffy effect.
10. Alternate colors (optional): If you’re using multiple colors of tulle, alternate between each color as you attach the strips to create a pattern or gradient effect.
11. Adjust tulle placement: After attaching all of the tulle strips, gently shift and adjust them around the elastic waistband to ensure even spacing and coverage.
12. Trim excess tulle: If necessary, trim any uneven or excessively long strips of tulle to achieve your desired tutu length.
13. Fluff the tutu: Gently separate and fluff out each layer of tulle to give the tutu its full, voluminous appearance.
14. Try on your new tutu: Have the wearer try on their new tutu and enjoy twirling around in their custom-made creation!
Now you have a beautiful homemade tutu, perfect for any occasion! Personalize your design by adding embellishments like ribbons, beads, or sparkles, or keep it minimal and elegant. The possibilities are endless with this easy-to-follow tutorial to make a tutu in just 14 steps.
