Get ready to transform yourself into a charming shelled reptile with this easy-to-follow guide.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Green or brown long-sleeved shirt
2. Green or brown leggings or pants
3. Large piece of cardboard or foam board
4. Green, brown, yellow, and/or black felt
5. Scissors
6. Hot glue gun and glue sticks
7. Fabric markers (optional)
8. Green or brown baseball cap (optional)
Step 1: Prepare Your Base Outfit
Start by choosing a green or brown long-sleeved shirt and matching leggings or pants for the base of your turtle costume. This will act as the under-layer for your shell and represent the color of the turtle’s skin.
Step 2: Create the Shell
To make the turtle shell, take your large piece of cardboard or foam board and cut it into an oval shape. The shell should be large enough to cover the majority of your back without hindering movement or comfortability.
Next, trace smaller oval shapes onto your felt materials using either green, brown, yellow, and/or black according to your desired turtle shell pattern. You can also use fabric markers to draw intricate patterns onto the felt pieces before cutting them out if you wish.
Once you have cut out all your felt pieces representing the different plates of a turtle’s shell, lay them out on the cardboard/film fabric oval in a pattern that resembles that of a real turtle shell then use hot glue to secure each piece.
Step 3: Attach Shoulder Straps
In order to wear your turtle shell like a backpack, you will need to create shoulder straps. Cut two long pieces of felt or fabric in the color that matches your base shirt. Attach each strap to the top and bottom of the shell with hot glue, ensuring they are equally spaced apart and long enough to comfortably rest on your shoulders.
Step 4: Add Finishing Touches (Optional)
If you want to further enhance your turtle costume, consider making a turtle headpiece using a green or brown baseball cap. Cut additional felt pieces in the shape of turtle eyes, nose, and mouth, then use hot glue to attach these elements onto the cap.
You may also want to create simple-to-wear turtle feet by cutting out felt shapes that resemble flippers and attaching them to the top of your shoes with fabric glue or safety pins.
Now that you have completed your DIY turtle costume, wear it with pride! Enjoy standing out at your next costume-themed event or Halloween party as an adorable and unique shelled reptile. Happy dressing up!
