How to Make a Spam Musubi: 13 Steps
Spam musubi is a popular Hawaiian snack that combines Japanese sushi and the beloved canned luncheon meat, Spam. This delicious and easy-to-make treat makes for a great lunch or appetizer at parties. Follow these 13 simple steps to create your very own Spam musubi.
1. Gather all the necessary ingredients and equipment:
– Cooked sushi rice (3 cups)
– Spam (1 can)
– Nori seaweed sheets (8-10 sheets)
– Soy sauce (1/2 cup)
– Sugar (1/4 cup)
– Optional toppings: furikake, Japanese pickled vegetables, sesame seeds
– Musubi mold or spam can
– Rice cooker
– Frying pan
– Cutting board and knife
– Bowl and spoon for mixing sauce
2. Cook the sushi rice in a rice cooker according to the package instructions.
3. While the rice is cooking, open the can of Spam, drain it, and slice it into 8-10 even slices.
4. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce and sugar to create a teriyaki sauce.
5. Heat a frying pan on medium heat and fry the Spam slices until they are slightly crispy on both sides.
6. Using a spoon, carefully pour some teriyaki sauce over each slice of Spam while in the pan to glaze them. Let them cook for additional 1-2 minutes until caramelized.
7. Place the glazed Spam slices onto a plate and let them cool while you prepare your nori sheets.
8. Cut your nori sheets into strips wide enough to wrap around your Spam slices completely.
9. If using a musubi mold, wet it slightly to prevent the rice from sticking, then place it on top of a strip of nori.
10. Press a layer of cooked sushi rice into the bottom of the musubi mold. Ensure the rice layer is thick enough to support the Spam slices without falling apart.
11. Place a piece of cooled, glazed Spam on top of the rice layer and press it down slightly.
12. Optional: Add any desired toppings, such as furikake seasoning or Japanese pickled vegetables, on top of the Spam.
13. Fold the nori over the top of the rice and Spam, and press it down gently to secure it in place. Carefully remove the musubi from the mold. Repeat this process for all your Spam slices.
Enjoy your homemade Spam musubi as a snack, meal, or party appetizer!
