How to Make a Shower Pan
A well-built shower pan is the foundation of a functional and leak-free shower. Implementing a proper shower pan not only maintains the integrity of your bathroom floor but also ensures that you have a comfortable, watertight space to rejuvenate. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make a shower pan, so you can handle this essential project with ease.
1. Gather Essential Materials and Tools
Before starting, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools ready. For building a shower pan, you will need:
– Cement board
– Waterproof membrane (e.g., liquid rubber or PVC liner)
– Quick-setting mortar
– Deck mud mix
– Trowel
– Screed board
– Level
– Tape measure
– Framing square or straight edge
– Utility knife
2. Prepare Your Shower Area
The first thing to do is prepare your shower area, which may include demolishing any existing structure if needed. Ensure that the subfloor is clean, free of debris, and level. If it’s not level, use self-leveling concrete to create an even surface.
3. Install Cement Board
Secure the cement board on all of your shower walls using screws designed for use with it. This process includes cutting pieces to fit your area’s shape and size. Be sure the board covers from floor level up to your planned tile height.
4. Apply Waterproof Membrane
Apply either a liquid rubber or PVC liner as your waterproof membrane across all cement boards’ entire surface using manufacturer guidelines. Start at the bottom of each wall and work upward progressively; for any overlap areas, allow enough overlap as recommended by the manufacturer.
5. Create Mortar Pre-Slope Base
Prepare and mix the quick-setting mortar according to instructions provided on the package. Spread it over the subfloor, forming a slight slope towards the shower drain. Typically, the slope should be about 1/4 inch per foot. Allow the mortar pre-slope to cure and set overnight.
6. Install the Shower Drain Base
Fit the shower drain base into the center of your shower pan. Check that the flange height is appropriate for the tile thickness you’re using; adjust as necessary.
7. Mix Deck Mud
Follow instructions on your deck mud mix, adjust water ratio accordingly, and mix to reach the consistence of damp sand that can hold shape. Ideally, it should not be too watery or too dry.
8. Apply Deck Mud
Starting at the walls, apply deck mud to form your shower pan base with a trowel. Use the screed board and level to evenly tamp down and shape the mud from walls to drain, maintaining a consistent slope. Avoid creating any dips or low spots.
9. Allow Shower Pan To Set
Give your new shower pan ample time to properly set and cure – usually about 24 hours. Once completely dry, prepare it for tiling by sweeping away any loose material.
10. Tile Your Shower Pan
Select tile and materials suitable for a moist environment like cementitious grout approved for wet areas, follow proper tile setting methods and tile all surfaces of your new shower pan and seal as per manufacturer guidelines.
With these steps in mind, you’re now ready to create a custom shower pan for your bathroom renovation project! Plan carefully, follow manufacturer guidelines for all materials used, and enjoy your beautiful new shower when complete.
