How to Make a Round Tablecloth: 13 Steps
A round tablecloth can add charm and elegance to your dining space. Follow these 13 steps to create a beautiful and customized tablecloth that perfectly fits your round table.
1. Measure your table: To get the correct size for your tablecloth, measure the diameter of your table. Add twice the desired drop (the length you want the tablecloth to hang from the edge of the table) to calculate the total diameter for your new tablecloth.
2. Choose your fabric: Select a fabric that complements your dining area’s decor. Opt for materials durable enough for repeated use and washing, such as cotton or linen.
3. Calculate fabric yardage: Divide the total diameter by 36 to determine how many yards of fabric you’ll need. Round up to allow for seam allowances and pattern matching if necessary.
4. Prewash the fabric: Before cutting, prewash and press the fabric according to its care instructions. This prevents shrinking after you’ve sewn the tablecloth.
5. Create a pattern: To create an even circle, fold a large piece of paper or cardboard in half, then in half again to obtain a quarter circle shape. Measure out from each corner using half of your total diameter, then cut along this curve.
6. Prepare your fabric: Fold your fabric into quarters, aligning selvages and raw edges evenly. Lay it out on a flat surface with enough space for cutting.
7. Cut the fabric: Place your pattern on top of the folded fabric, with corners aligned along raw edges and folded sides. Pin in place and cut around the curve with sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
8. Mark seam allowances: On the wrong side of your fabric, mark 1/2-inch seam allowance around the entire circumference using tailor’s chalk or a disappearing ink pen.
9. Create a narrow hem: Starting at any point along the tablecloth edge, fold the fabric over by 1/4-inch, then fold it again by another 1/4-inch, enclosing the raw edge. Pin in place.
10. Sew the hem: Stitch close to the inner folded edge using a straight stitch on your sewing machine. To maintain an even hem on curves, gently pivot your work as you sew.
11. Press the tablecloth: After sewing down your hem, press it flat using an iron on the appropriate setting for your fabric.
12. Add embellishments (optional): If you’d like to further personalize your tablecloth, consider attaching lace trim, ribbon, or other decorative elements to the hem or edge of your tablecloth.
13. Enjoy your new round tablecloth: Place your newly created tablecloth onto your round table and admire the result of your hard work while enjoying gatherings with friends and family in style.
With these 13 steps, you can create a round tablecloth that complements your dining area and adds charm to every meal. Your homemaking skills will impress guests and enliven each gathering around the table.
