How to Make a Pilgrim Costume: 14 Steps
Introduction:
Pilgrim costumes are often worn for school plays, Thanksgiving celebrations, or historical reenactments. Making your own costume can be both fun and inexpensive. Follow these 14 steps to create your perfect pilgrim outfit.
1. Gather materials:
To begin, you’ll need black or dark brown fabric (for the dress or pants), white fabric (for the collar and cuffs), black shoes, a plain white apron, and a black hat or bonnet.
2. Measure yourself:
Take accurate measurements of your chest, waist, hips, and inseam for pants or skirt length. This will help ensure that your costume fits properly.
3. Create the dress or shirt:
For the dress, cut out a rectangular piece of fabric two times the width of your waist and your desired length from shoulder to hem. Fold the fabric in half and sew up the sides to create a simple shift dress. For a shirt, follow the same process but stop at hip length.
4. Add sleeves:
Cut two equal-sized rectangles from the black fabric and attach them to each side of your dress or shirt. Make sure they’re long enough to cover your arms down to your wrists.
5. Sew white cuffs:
Create white cuffs using the white fabric by cutting two rectangles and folding them in half lengthwise. Sew along the raw edges and attach them to the ends of the sleeves.
6. Design a collar:
Cut out a large white collar from your white fabric, in the shape of a wide semi-circle with an opening that fits around your neck comfortably.
7. Attach collar:
Sew the collar onto the neckline of your dress or shirt using small stitches that won’t be noticeable from afar.
8. Create pants (for males):
For male pilgrim costumes, measure and cut black or dark brown fabric to fit around your waist and your inseam measurement. Sew the fabric into a pantlike shape, making sure they fit comfortably.
9. Prepare a belt:
Cut a length of black fabric around two inches wide and long enough to fit around your waist. Sew it together lengthwise to create a simple belt.
10. Add belt loops:
Sew four small loops on either side of your pilgrim pants or dress using black thread, then thread the belt through these loops to keep it in place.
11. Make an apron:
Take the white fabric and cut a rectangular piece slightly smaller than your waist width and about knee length. Attach it to a, long strip of white fabric, which serves as the waistband. Tie around your waist for added historical accuracy.
12. Create a hat or bonnet:
For men, find a wide-brimmed black hat or create one using black felt and sturdy cardboard for the brim. Women can make a bonnet by cutting an oval from white fabric and attaching it to a wide length of white fabric which ties under your chin.
13. Add finishing touches:
Accessorize with black stockings or knee-high socks, and pair with plain black shoes or buckled shoes for historical accuracy.
14. Wear your costume with pride:
Now that you’ve completed your DIY pilgrim costume, be sure to wear it with confidence during plays, Thanksgiving pageants, or historical events!
Creating your own pilgrim costume is easy when you follow these 14 steps! When you’re done putting together your new outfit, enjoy showing off your hard work and feel proud of the time you spent making this classic American ensemble.
