How to Make a Hat Box: 15 Steps
Step 1: Assemble the necessary materials
To make a hat box, you will need the following materials:
– Cardboard
– Ruler
– Pencil
– Scissors or a box cutter
– Glue or tape for attaching cardboard pieces
– Fabric, paper, or decorative materials for covering the box
– Ribbon (optional)
– A hat to use for sizing
Step 2: Determine the size of your hat box
Measure the diameter and height of the hat you wish to store in the box. Add an extra inch or two for wiggle room.
Step 3: Cut out all necessary cardboard pieces
Cut two circles with a diameter equal to the measured size from Step 2, one for the top and one for the bottom of your hat box. Then, cut out a long rectangular piece whose length is equal to the circumference of these circles and whose width is equal to your desired height.
Step 4: Shape the side panel
Wrap your rectangular piece around one of your circular pieces to form a side panel and secure with glue or tape.
Step 5: Attach the side panel to the base
Securely glue or tape the side panel to one of your circular pieces, creating a cylindrical shape.
Step 6: Cut out an inner rim
For added reinforcement, cut out a long strip of cardboard slightly shorter than your measured circumference. Fold it and insert inside the bottom edge of your newly formed cylinder.
Step 7: Covering your hat box with fabric or decorative paper
Measure and cut your fabric or paper to match that of your cylindrical shape. Apply glue evenly on one side then spread it onto your hat box surfaces. Smooth any wrinkles as you go.
Step 8: Trimming excess material
With scissors or a box cutter, trim off excess fabric or paper from both ends of your box to maintain a clean look.
Step 9: Adding details to your hat box
You can add ribbons, buttons, or bows to make your hat box more visually appealing. Attach them with glue or use a needle and thread if you prefer.
Step 10: Creating a lid for the hat box
Take the second circular cardboard piece and gently bend it into a shallow convex shape. This will serve as your lid.
Step 11: Cover the lid with fabric or decorative paper
Repeat Steps 7 and 8 to cover the lid with fabric or paper as desired.
Step 12: Attach ribbon as a handle (optional)
Attach two pieces of ribbon on opposite sides of the lid’s outer edge using glue or stitching them in place. Leave enough slack to create a small handle.
Step 13: Add velcro or magnetic closures (optional)
If you wish for extra security, attach small pieces of adhesive velcro or magnets to the inside lip of the box and corresponding areas on the lid to hold it in place securely.
Step 14: Allow the glue to dry
Give your hat box ample time for all glued components to dry thoroughly before adding your hat inside.
Step 15: Place your hat in the finished hat box
When drying is complete, gently place your hat inside and fasten the lid as needed. Your homemade hat box is now ready for use!
