How to Make a Hamster Bin Cage: 14 Steps
Hamsters are beloved pets, and providing them with a comfortable living space is a top priority for any responsible owner. A bin cage is a cost-effective, DIY alternative to traditional commercial cages. Here are 14 steps to create your very own hamster bin cage.
1. Choose the right bin: Select a plastic storage bin that provides ample space for your hamster to move around. Look for clear or semi-clear bins with sturdy walls, a minimum of 20 gallons in capacity.
2. Gather necessary materials: You’ll need a power drill, wire mesh or grid panels, zip ties, sandpaper or a file, wire cutters, adhesive velcro or screws (optional), and other accessories as desired (such as hideouts, exercise wheels, and more).
3. Ventilate the sides: Drill evenly spaced holes along the sides of the bin using your power drill. The holes should be large enough for proper air circulation but small enough to prevent escape.
4. Add ventilation on lid: Cut out a rectangular section from the lid of the bin – leave at least 2 inches around the edges for structural stability.
5. Prepare wire mesh: Size and cut your wire mesh or grid panel to fit over the rectangular hole in the lid.
6. File edges: Smooth out any sharp edges on both the bin and the wire mesh using sandpaper or a file.
7. Attach mesh to lid: Secure your wire mesh to the inside of the bin lid using zip ties, screws, or adhesive velcro.
8. Cut an entry hole (optional): If you want an external tubing system or play area, cut an entry hole in one side of the bin with enough clearance for tubing attachment.
9. Sand down entry hole (optional): Use sandpaper or a file to smooth out any sharp edges around the entry hole.
10. Connect tubing (optional): Insert hamster-safe tubing through the entry hole and make sure all connections are secure.
11. Create a comfortable bedding: Lay down an appropriate layer of bedding material (such as paper or aspen shavings) inside the bin at a depth of 1-2 inches.
12. Add accessories: Place items like hiding spots, exercise wheels, toys, chews, and a water bottle into your bin cage to enhance your hamster’s environment. Ensure sharp edges are sanded down before placing in the cage.
13. Secure the lid: Attach the lid to the bin, ensuring that it is secure and there are no gaps through which your hamster might escape.
14. Introduce your hamster: Allow your furry friend some time to explore and become accustomed to their new bin cage. Supervise them during initial exploration to ensure your DIY creation is safe and escape-proof.
Now you have created a cost-effective and customizable living space for your hamster. Regularly clean and maintain your hamster bin cage to ensure that it remains hygienic and in good condition for your pet’s continued comfort and wellbeing.
