A thermos, also known as a vacuum flask, is a handy device for keeping beverages hot or cold for extended periods. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, camper, or someone who wants to enjoy your morning coffee longer while on-the-go, this article is just for you. We’ll take you through the steps to make your own homemade thermos using easily available materials.
Materials you’ll need:
1. Two glass bottles – one smaller and one larger (e.g., soda bottles or mason jars)
2. Insulating material – plastic, foam, or bubble wrap
3. Aluminum foil
4. Duct tape or glue
5. Scissors
6. A lid that fits the larger bottle (preferably insulated)
Step 1: Prepare the glass bottles
Take your two glass bottles and make sure they’re cleaned thoroughly. The smaller bottle should fit inside the larger bottle comfortably with some space in between.
Step 2: Insulate the inner bottle
We need to insulate the smaller bottle in order to minimize heat transfer between the two vessels. Use your chosen insulating material and wrap it around the smaller bottle evenly and completely, ensuring it covers all surfaces.
Step 3: Apply aluminum foil
To further enhance insulation, wrap aluminum foil around the insulated inner bottle. The shiny side should be facing outward so that it reflects heat back towards the beverage inside.
Step 4: Fit the inner bottle into the outer one
Carefully insert the insulated inner bottle into the larger bottle so that they are centered with each other. There should be an even space around all sides between both bottles.
Step 5: Fill the space with insulating material
To further insulate your DIY thermos, fill the gap between both bottles with more of your chosen insulating material until there’s no room left.
Step 6: Seal the edges
Using duct tape or glue, seal the edges of the two bottles to create an airtight seal. This will help maintain maximum insulation possible and prevent any unwanted heat transfer.
Step 7: Attach the lid
Finish your DIY thermos by attaching the insulated lid to the larger bottle. If you don’t have an insulated lid, consider using a regular lid with a layer of insulating material such as foam or bubble wrap underneath it for additional insulation.
And voilà! You’ve just successfully made your own DIY thermos. Now you can easily store and enjoy your favorite hot or cold beverages for longer periods when venturing outdoors, going on road trips, or working long hours. Remember that proper maintenance and cleaning are essential to keep your homemade thermos in top-notch condition.
