Plastic string crafts are a fun and creative way to spend your free time. One of the most popular and simple plastic string designs is the cobra design. Follow these instructions, and you will learn how to make your own beautiful cobra with plastic string.
Materials:
1. Two different colored plastic strings (also called lanyard or gimp), each about 5 feet long.
2. Scissors
3. A Keyring or hook (optional)
Instructions:
1. Fold each of the two plastic strings in half, creating a loop at their midpoints.
2. If using the keyring or hook, slip it through both folded loops so that it is on the inside of the loop.
3. Place one colored string loop horizontally on a flat surface, making sure that its ends are even on both sides of the center loop.
4. Put the second colored string loop over and perpendicular to the first one so you have a cross shape (+), with its mid-loop directly above the first string’s center loop. Keep its ends even on either side of the center loop as well.
5. Start braiding by taking the right strand of the top colored string (A) and passing it over itself, then under and through the right-side loop formed by the bottom colored string (B). Pull it tight towards you.
6. Next, take the left strand of the top colored string (A) and pass it over itself, then under and through the left-side loop formed by the bottom colored string (B). Pull it tight away from you.
7. Continue weaving with B’s right strand now, passing it over A’s right strand, then under and through B’s own right-side loop. Pull it tight towards you.
8. Repeat on B’s left side: Take B’s left strand, pass it over A’s left strand, and under and through B’s own left-side loop. Pull it tight away from you.
9. Keep repeating steps 5-8, alternating between A and B, until your cobra design reaches the desired length.
10. To finish your creation, close off the weave by tying both ends of each string together with a secure knot. Double-knot for extra security.
11. Trim off the excess plastic string with scissors, leaving around 1-1.5 inches of tail end.
Congratulations! You have now created your very own cobra with plastic string. With practice, you’ll become faster, and soon you’ll be able to create beautiful plastic string crafts as gifts or even sell them at local craft fairs or online marketplaces.
