How to Make a Chinese Gong: 5 Steps
Step 1: Gather materials and choose a size
To make your own Chinese gong, you’ll need a few essential materials, including a steel or brass disc, string, a wooden mallet, and a stand. Depending on your desired gong size, the type of material can vary. Larger gongs usually use steel or brass discs for better sound resonance.
Step 2: Shape the disc
Once you’ve chosen the size and material of your gong, it’s time to shape the disc. Using a hammer and anvil, or other specialized tools, carefully work the metal until it adopts the desired curve. This can be quite time-consuming and requires precision to achieve the perfect shape. Be patient and ensure that you’re maintaining a consistent curve throughout the process.
Step 3: Polish the surface
After shaping your gong, smooth out any rough spots or imperfections on its surface. Start by using coarse-grit sandpaper to remove any unlevel sections. Next, switch to a finer-grit sandpaper for polishing until you achieve a mirror-like finish on both sides of the disc.
Step 4: Add the suspension cord
The next step is to attach a suspension cord or string to your gong so you can hang it from the stand. Measure carefully for an equal length of string on both sides of the gong to ensure balance once it’s suspended. Make sure that it’s securely held in place by attaching it through one of two methods:
a) Drill small holes near the edge of the disc (roughly equidistant from each other), then thread the string through these holes.
b) Fold duct tape over itself several times around the string and adhere it along the edge of the gong with strong adhesive.
Step 5: Make a mallet and set up your stand
Finally, make your wooden mallet by attaching a small, round wooden head to a sturdy dowel. Wrap the head in soft fabric (like felt) to achieve a better sound when striking the gong. To complete your Chinese gong setup, mount it on a sturdy stand that ensures stability while playing.
With these 5 simple steps, you now have a beautifully crafted Chinese gong ready to be played. Whether it’s for personal enjoyment or adding an exotic touch to your musical performances, your handmade gong is sure to impress and delight.
