How to Make a Braided Horse Rein
A braided horse rein is an essential tool for riders, providing close communication between horse and rider while showcasing their unique style. Learning how to make your own braided rein can be an enjoyable and practical skill for any equestrian enthusiast. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating a custom braided horse rein.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Paracord (preferably 550 cord)
2. Snap hooks or buckles
3. Scissors
4. Lighter
5. Tape measure
6. Rubber bands
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Paracord
First, decide on the length of your finished rein. Most reins are between 7 to 10 feet long. You will need four times the desired length for each strand of paracord you braid. To make a four-strand round braid, cut four equal-length strands that are four times the desired length of your finished rein.
Step 2: Attach Snap Hooks or Buckles
Take all four strands and fold them in half. Attach the snap hooks or buckles to the midpoint of these strands, securing them together with a knot if necessary.
Step 3: Start the Braid
To start braiding the paracord, separate the four strands into two groups (one group with two cords on each side). Choose a rubber band to keep track of your top side of the braid.
Step 4: Four Strand Round Braid Technique
a) Take the rightmost cord from one side and pass it behind the middle cords.
b) Bring this cord to the opposite side by passing it over one cord and under another.
c) Take the leftmost cord from the other side and pass it behind the middle cords.
d) Bring this cord to its original side by passing it over one cord and under another.
e) Repeat steps a-d until you reach the desired length of your braid.
Step 5: Finish the Braid
After reaching the desired length, securely tie off the braid with a double overhand knot or reef knot. Trim any excess paracord with scissors and melt the ends using a lighter to prevent fraying. Be cautious when working with a lighter, so you do not accidentally burn through the braid.
Step 6: Attach Snap Hooks or Buckles to the Other End
Attach the remaining snap hooks or buckles to the loose end of your braided rein. You can use a lanyard knot, cow hitch, or a similar secure knotting technique.
Congratulations! You have now successfully created your own custom braided horse rein. With practice, you can experiment with different colors and braiding techniques to create unique and personal reins for yourself or as gifts for your riding companions. Enjoy your new skill and happy riding!
