How to Make a Book Purse
A book purse is a unique and trendy accessory that allows you to repurpose your favorite book into a fashionable bag. With a bit of creativity, dedication, and supplies, you can transform an ordinary book into a stunning purse that is bound to attract attention and admiration. In this article, we will guide you step-by-step in creating your very own book purse.
Materials You Will Need:
1. A hardcover book of your choice
2. Fabric for lining (preferably a sturdy fabric like canvas or upholstery)
3. A fabric glue or hot glue gun
4. A pair of scissors
5. Ribbon or other embellishments for decoration
6. A purse handle (either store-bought or DIY)
7. A ruler
8. A pencil or marker
9. A craft knife
Step 1: Choose the Right Book
Select a hardcover book that is both aesthetically appealing and has a sturdy spine since it will serve as the base for your purse. The size of the book will determine the size of your finished purse.
Step 2: Remove the Book’s Contents
Using a craft knife, carefully cut out the pages along the spine, preserving the front and back cover intact. Be sure not to damage the spine while doing this.
Step 3: Measure and Cut the Lining Fabric
Measure the inside covers, including both sides of the spine if any part of it will show on the inside of your purse, and cut out two pieces of fabric accordingly (add about half an inch seam allowance). You are now ready to line the inside covers.
Step 4: Glue Lining Fabric Inside Covers
Apply fabric glue or hot glue on one piece of lining fabric (on its wrong side) before sticking it to one side of the binding with a half-inch extra fabric folded over its edges. Repeat the process on the other side and make sure both pieces are glued securely to avoid fraying.
Step 5: Attach Purse Handle
You can purchase a ready-made purse handle or create one using beads, leather straps, or metal chains. Attach your chosen handle to the top edge of both covers by sewing or using glue.
Step 6: Create a Side Panel (Optional)
For a more substantial purse, you can create side panels using the same lining fabric. Measure the height and width of the opening you would like for your purse, cut two pieces of fabric, and glue them to the insides of the front and back covers.
Step 7: Final Embellishments and Closure
Embellish your book purse with ribbons, beads, buttons, or any decorative items that match your theme. Finally, add a snap closure or magnetic clasp to secure your purse.
Your unique and stylish book purse is now ready to use! This customized accessory is not only an excellent conversation starter, but it is also an ideal gift for book lovers or avid DIY enthusiasts. Get creative with book choices and embellishments to create a variety of purses for different occasions and outfits!
