How to Make a Bed Skirt: 12 Steps
A bed skirt, also known as a dust ruffle, is a decorative piece of fabric used to cover the space between the bottom of your mattress and the floor. Not only does it add a touch of elegance to your bedroom decor, but it also helps conceal any unsightly storage or items you might have under your bed. If you’re looking to create a custom bed skirt for your bed, follow these 12 simple steps.
1. Measure Your Bed: First, you need to measure the dimensions of your bed. Measure the width and length of the mattress and note down the measurements. Also, measure the distance from the base of the mattress to the floor as this will determine how long your bed skirt should be.
2. Choose Your Fabric: Pick a fabric that complements your bedroom decor and can withstand regular laundering. Cotton and linen are popular choices for bed skirts due to their durability and ease of care.
3. Calculate Fabric Amount: Based on your measurements from step one, calculate how much fabric you will need. Add an extra inch to each side for seam allowances.
4. Cut Fabric Panels: Cut three panels from your chosen fabric – one for each side and one for the foot of the bed. Each panel should be as long as its corresponding side plus an additional inch for seam allowances.
5. Hem The Panels: Fold over half an inch at both top and bottom edges of each panel, then fold over again so that raw edges are hidden. Press with an iron before sewing along these folds to create neatly hemmed panels.
6. Prepare The Waistband: Cut a waistband strip from fabric or use premade waistband that is long enough to go around three sides of your mattress plus an additional inch for seam allowances.
7. Attach Panels To Waistband: Pin each panel to the waistband with right sides together and raw edges aligned. There should be a small gap at the head of the bed to allow for ease when putting the bed skirt on. Sew along the edges, making sure to leave an opening for turning later.
8. Create Pleats: To create a more polished look, you can add pleats along each panel. For spaced pleats, measure and mark equally spaced intervals on your waistband before sewing them in place.
9. Add Velcro (Optional): If you prefer a more secure fit, sew a strip of adhesive-backed Velcro along the inside of your bed skirt’s waistband and attach the corresponding Velcro strip to the box spring.
Press And Finish: Turn your bed skirt right side out and press along all seams to give it a neat appearance. Sew up any remaining openings.
10. Attach To Bed: Place your bed skirt around the perimeter of your mattress base or box spring, aligning its edges with those of the bed frame, making sure pleats are evenly spaced.
11. Adjust And Admire: Make any necessary adjustments to ensure that your bed skirt hangs evenly and neatly around your bed, then step back and admire your beautiful handiwork!
By following these 12 simple steps, you can create an elegant and stylish custom bed skirt that will elevate your bedroom decor while also providing valuable concealed storage space beneath your bed.
