How to Make a Basic Felt Doll: 13 Steps
Step 1: Choose a doll design and its size
Before you start making a felt doll, it is important to decide on the design and size of your doll. You can find hundreds of patterns online, or you can create your own unique design.
Step 2: Gather your materials
To make a felt doll, you will need:
– Polyester or wool felt in various colors
– Embroidery thread or floss
– Embroidery needle
– Scissors
– Pins
– Doll stuffing material
Step 3: Cut out the doll pattern pieces
After deciding on your pattern, print it out and cut out each piece. You may need to enlarge or reduce the pattern size, depending on the desired size of your doll.
Step 4: Trace the pattern onto felt
Placing the pattern onto the appropriate color of felt, use fabric chalk or a removable fabric marker to trace around each pattern piece.
Step 5: Cut out felt pieces
Using sharp scissors, cut out each felt piece along the traced lines.
Step 6: Create the face details
Using embroidery thread or floss, stitch facial features like eyes, eyebrows, and mouth onto the front piece of your doll’s head.
Step 7: Sew on hair (optional)
If you want to add hair to your felt doll, use embroidery thread or yarn in a matching color. Attach it by either sewing rows of stitches or gluing small pieces onto the head of your doll.
Step 8: Pin and sew limbs
With right sides together, pin each pair of limb pieces (arms and legs) together and sew along their edges using a small backstitching technique, leaving an opening for stuffing.
Step 9: Stuff limbs and sew closed
Gently stuff each limb with your chosen stuffing material. Once fully stuffed, sew the open edges closed using a hidden ladder stitch.
Step 10: Sew the body
Place the front and back pieces of the body together, with right sides facing each other. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening for stuffing at the bottom.
Step 11: Attach limbs to the body
Before stuffing the body, sew each limb onto the inside of the body front. Make sure they are placed evenly and securely within the seam allowance.
Step 12: Stuff body and sew closed
Stuff your doll’s body until it reaches your desired firmness. Sew closed the opening at the bottom using a hidden ladder stitch.
Step 13: Add finishing touches (optional)
Add additional personalizations, like clothing or accessories, to make your felt doll unique. You can sew felt clothes directly onto the doll or create removable pieces.
Congratulations! Your basic felt doll is now complete and ready to be played with or displayed. With practice and creativity, you can adapt this 13-step process to create all sorts of adorable felt characters.
