How to Light Briquettes: 10 Steps
1. Choose the right briquettes: To get the best heat and burn, opt for high-quality briquettes formed from hardwood or lump charcoal without any added chemicals.
2. Set up your grill: Place the grill in a stable, flat, and open area away from any flammable materials. Make sure the grates are clean and the air vents are open.
3. Create a briquette mound: Pour your briquettes directly onto the coal grate. Arrange them into a pyramid shape with the wider base in contact with the grate and tapering upward.
4. Add a chimney starter (optional): If you have one, place a chimney starter on top of your briquette mound. Fill it with briquettes, ensuring its vent holes stay unrestricted.
5. Light paper under the briquettes: If using a chimney starter, stuff newspaper into the bottom chamber. If not, place scrunched-up newspaper pieces between and around the outer layer of your briquette mound.
6. Ignite the newspaper: Using a long-reach lighter or matches, light multiple points on the newspaper until it catches fire all around your mound or begins to burn within your chimney starter.
7. Monitor combustion progress: Let the newspaper burn and fan out as it ignites the surrounding briquettes. With a chimney starter, wait for flames to reach through and engulf most of the briquettes at its top.
8. Allow for ash formation: As briquettes ignite, wait for them to become partly covered in grayish-white ash before proceeding. This generally takes about 20-30 minutes for a normal-sized charcoal grill.
9. Spread out heated briquettes: Once ash forms on most briquettes – signaling thorough ignition – use heat-resistant gloves and long tongs to carefully spread them evenly across the coal grate.
10. Preheat and begin grilling: Place your cooking grate above the briquettes, cover your grill (if applicable), and let it preheat for a few minutes. Position your food on the grill, cook to desired temperatures, and enjoy the flavorful results of your lit briquettes!
Follow these ten steps to ensure a successful barbecue experience with perfectly ignited briquettes. Happy grilling!
