How to Light a Water Heater
If you’ve recently experienced a power outage or had your water heater serviced, you may need to relight your water heater’s pilot light. This essential guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, ensuring that you can safely and effectively restore your hot water supply.
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items handy: a long lighter or matchstick, flashlight, and the manufacturer’s instructions for your water heater.
1. Safety first
Before attempting to light your water heater’s pilot light, take a few moments to ensure that there are no leaks or odors. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the gas supply valve immediately and call a professional.
2. Locate the access panel
The pilot light is typically located behind an access panel on the lower portion of your water heater. Carefully remove this panel by lifting off or unscrewing it (depending on your specific model).
3. Familiarize yourself with the control knob
The control knob will be found near the access panel, and it will usually have three settings: “OFF,” “Pilot,” and “ON.” In some cases, there may also be an indication for temperature adjustment on this knob.
4. Turn off the gas control knob
Rotate the gas control knob to the “OFF” position and wait at least five minutes for any remaining gas in the area to dissipate. This is essential for avoiding any risk of ignition while conducting further steps.
5. Set control knob to ‘Pilot’
After waiting for five minutes, turn the control knob to the “Pilot” setting.
6. Ignite pilot light
Hold down the control knob to release gas into the pilot light combustion chamber. At the same time, use a long lighter or matchstick to ignite the pilot light. Keep holding down the knob for about 48-60 seconds to ensure the pilot light remains lit after releasing the knob.
7. Verify successful lighting
After releasing the control knob, check if the pilot light remains lit. If it doesn’t, repeat step 6 once or twice more. If the pilot light keeps going out, consult a professional plumber for assistance.
8. Turn control knob to ‘ON’
Once the pilot light has been successfully ignited and remains lit, turn the control knob to the “ON” position to activate your water heater.
9. Adjust temperature
If your control knob has an integrated temperature adjustment feature, set it according to your preference and specific manufacturer recommendations.
10. Replace access panel
Finally, replace the access panel by securely fastening it back onto your water heater.
With these steps complete, you should now have successfully relit your water heater’s pilot light. In case of any complications or doubts during this process, please consult a professional plumber to ensure complete safety and correct procedures.
