How to Knit Gloves
Knitting gloves might seem like a daunting task, especially for beginners, but it is an enjoyable and rewarding project. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to knit gloves. With some time, patience, and these easy-to-follow instructions, you’ll have a cozy pair of handmade gloves to keep you warm during the colder months.
Materials and Tools:
1.Yarn:Choose something warm like wool or acrylic in your desired color and weight.
2.Knitting needles:Double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the size recommended for your chosen yarn.
3.Stitch markers
4.Tapestry needle
5.Scissors
6.Measuring tape or ruler
Step 1: Measure your hand
Measure the circumference of your palm, excluding the thumb, and the length of your hand from the base to the tip of your middle finger. These measurements will help you determine how many stitches you’ll need for your gloves.
Step 2: Cast on and knit the cuff
Begin by casting on the required number of stitches to fit around your wrist comfortably. This number should be divisible by 4. To create ribbing for the cuff, simply alternate between knitting one stitch and purling the next (K1, P1) for every round until the desired cuff length is achieved.
Step 3: Divide stitches for fingers/thumb openings
Using stitch markers, divide your stitches into separate sections to create finger gussets for each finger and thumb. Start by making a separate section for thumb gusset by placing a marker after specific number of stitches as per size of your glove followed by marker placed after every quarter of remaining stitches around DPNs divided evenly.
Step 4: Increase stitches for thumb gusset
As you continue knitting, increase thumb gusset by knitting into the front and back of the stitch before and after the thumb gusset marker, thus increasing your stitch count by 2. Repeat this increase every two rounds until the desired thumb gusset width is achieved.
Step 5: Knit the hand section
Once you have finished the thumb gusset, continue knitting in a circular fashion for all stitches except the ones marked for thumb gusset. After reaching your desired hand length from cuff to base of fingers, you can begin working on your finger sections.
Step 6: Knit each finger
Start with the pinky finger (smallest) and knit required number of rounds until that finger reaches its tip. Bind off and cut yarn leaving tail for joining other fingers with hand section. Then knit ring, middle and index fingers individually, attaching each glove finger with respective hand section as you did with pinky.
Step 7: Knit the thumb
Pick up and knit stitches from your thumb gusset and continue knitting in circular fashion until it reaches its full length. Then bind off, cut yarn to leave enough tail to weave in later.
Step 8: Weave in ends and secure gloves
Using a tapestry needle, weave all loose ends into the glove fabric, ensuring that they’re secured neatly without causing any bulk.
Now that you have completed knitting your gloves, wear them proudly or give them as a thoughtful handmade gift. As you become more comfortable with the process, feel free to experiment with different knitting patterns or techniques to add your unique touch to your creations. Happy knitting!
