How to Install CentOS
Introduction:
CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) is a popular, open-source Linux distribution largely based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It’s ideal for setting up servers, hosting websites, or deploying other enterprise-level applications.
In this tutorial, we will walk you through the process of installing CentOS on your computer. Let’s dive right in!
Step 1: Download the CentOS ISO File
Head to the official CentOS website (https://www.centos.org/download/) and download the latest CentOS ISO file for your desired platform (usually either x86_64 or ARM).
Step 2: Create a Bootable Drive
Once the ISO file is downloaded, create a bootable USB drive using a tool like Rufus (https://rufus.ie/) or balenaEtcher (https://www.balena.io/etcher/). Follow the software’s instructions for creating a bootable drive.
Step 3: Prepare Your Computer
Insert the bootable USB drive into your computer and restart it. Make sure to select the USB drive as the primary boot device in your computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings if necessary.
Step 4: Boot into the CentOS Installer
Your computer should now boot into the CentOS installer. In most cases, you’ll be presented with a welcome screen. Choose your preferred language and click on “Continue.”
Step 5: Customize Installation Settings
On the following screen, customize your installation by selecting various options:
1.Date & Time – Select your region and city from the maps provided.
2.Keyboard – Choose your preferred keyboard layout.
3.Language Support – Add any additional languages you’d like to use on your system.
4.Software Selection – You can choose between different software environments (e.g., Minimal Install, Server with GUI).
5.Installation Destination – Select which storage space you want to install CentOS on.
After making your selections, click “Done” to continue.
Step 6: Begin Installation
After finishing with the settings and returning to the main menu, click on the “Begin Installation” button. The installer will now proceed to copy the necessary files and configure your system.
Step 7: Set Root Password and Create User
While the installation is in progress, click on “Root Password” and set a strong, secure password for the root user. It’s also a good idea to create a standard user account by clicking on “User Creation” and filling out the necessary details.
Step 8: Complete Installation
Once the installation is complete, you will see a screen prompting you to reboot your system. Remove your bootable USB drive and click on “Reboot.”
Conclusion:
Congratulations! You have successfully installed CentOS on your computer. You can now configure your system further by installing additional software or fine-tuning network settings as required. We hope this guide has helped you get started with CentOS and that you enjoy using this powerful, enterprise-class operating system.
