How to Install a Rear View Camera
Installing a rear view camera in your vehicle provides improved safety, convenience, and can even raise the resale value of your car. In this article, we will guide you through the process of installing a rear view camera in a step-by-step manner. While professional installation is always an option, following these steps can save you money and give you a sense of accomplishment.
What You’ll Need:
1. A rear view camera kit (including camera, monitor, cables, and power supply)
2. Wireless transmitter and receiver (optional)
3. Screwdriver or drill
4. Electrical tape
5. Zip ties (optional)
6. Wire stripper or cutter
Step 1: Plan the Installation
Before starting the installation process, take time to plan where you will mount the camera and how you will route the cables. Decide whether you want a wired or wireless connection between the camera and monitor.
Step 2: Mount the Camera
Choose a location at the back of your vehicle that provides an unobstructed view of the area behind it. Most cameras are mounted on either the license plate frame or just above the rear bumper.
Once you have chosen a location, secure the camera with screws provided in your kit or use adhesive depending on your camera’s mounting options.
Step 3: Route the Cables
If using a wired connection, route the cable coming from your camera to where your monitor is located in your vehicle’s cabin. Run the cable along the underside of your vehicle and use zip ties for keeping it safely tucked away.
For vehicles with an existing reverse light connection, splice into that circuit for power when using a wireless transmitter/receiver setup.
Step 4: Connect Power Source
For wired connections, connect the power cable from your rear view camera to either your vehicle’s reverse light circuit or to a constant power source if you want your camera to function continuously.
For a wireless setup, connect the wireless transmitter’s power cable to the reverse light circuit or a constant power source and plug the transmitter into your camera.
Step 5: Install the Monitor
Mount your monitor in a location on your dashboard that is both comfortable and safe while driving. Connect the power cable from your monitor to a power source in your vehicle, such as the fuse box or cigarette lighter.
For wired connections, connect the video cable from the camera to the monitor. For wireless setups, connect the wireless receiver to the monitor and power it using an appropriate source.
Step 6: Test Your Rear View Camera
To ensure everything is functioning correctly, turn on your vehicle and put it in reverse. Your rear view camera’s image should now be displayed on your monitor. Make any necessary adjustments to camera angle, if needed.
Congratulations – you have successfully installed your rear view camera! By following these steps, you have added an important safety feature to your vehicle and increased its overall value.
