How to Install a Door Knob: 13 Steps
Installing a new door knob can be an easy and effective way to update the look of your home interior. Whether it’s replacing an old, worn-out knob or adding the finishing touch to a newly installed door, this guide will walk you through the process one step at a time.
1. Gather your tools and materials: You’ll need a screwdriver, tape measure, pencil, drilling machine, chisel, hammer, and (of course) your new door knob.
2. Remove the old door knob: If necessary, start by taking off the existing door knob. Use the screwdriver to remove any screws holding it in place and carefully pull out both knobs.
3. Measure and mark the dimensions: According to manufacturer’s instructions for the new knob, carefully measure and mark the center point of where the handle will be placed on the face of the door.
4. Drill holes for latch assembly: Apply gentle pressure while using a proper-sized hole saw or spade bit to drill holes for both sides of the latch assembly. Be cautious not to drill through all the way into opposite side of door.
5. Chisel out a recess for latch faceplate: Lay out dimensions of latch faceplate on edge of door where latch assembly is inserted. Use chisel and hammer to carefully create recess for faceplate flush with edge of door.
6. Insert latch assembly: Place the latch assembly into drilled hole with its beveled edge facing direction door closes. Then, secure it by screwing faceplate screws into chiseled recess.
7. Drill hole for spindle: Following manufacturer’s instructions, determine appropriate size for spindle hole (the part connecting both knobs). Mark on both faces of door then drill holes through entire thickness of door at those marks.
8. Align exterior knob with spindle hole: Position exterior part of new door knob over spindle hole (add any additional plates or faceplates provided by manufacturer). Make sure the connecting elements, such as screws or tabs, are lined up with the hole.
9. Connect interior and exterior knobs: With exterior part in place, insert spindle through hole and connect interior knob (or thumbnail if privacy/bathroom door handle). Ensure proper alignment within latch mechanism.
10. Fasten knobs together: Secure each side of the assembled door knobs with screws provided by manufacturer. Tighten until snug but do not overtighten to prevent damage to door material.
11. Test the latch: Close and open the door a few times to make sure that the latch is engaging properly when the knob is turned, and that it returns to its original position when released. Adjust accordingly if needed.
12. Install a strike plate (if necessary): If you need a new strike plate for your door frame, follow manufacturer’s instructions for placement, drill pilot holes, then use screws provided to securely attach it.
13. Clean up and inspect your work: Double-check the functionality of your new door knob one more time, then clean up any debris and admire your handiwork!
By following these 13 steps, you can successfully install a door knob in your home with confidence and ease. Enjoy the updated aesthetic and functionality that comes with this simple DIY project!
