Bearded dragons are popular and fascinating reptiles that make great pets for reptile enthusiasts of all experience levels. However, it’s important to learn how to properly handle and hold these unique creatures. Follow these 8 steps to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for both you and your bearded dragon.
1. Approach calmly: Move slowly and deliberately when approaching your bearded dragon’s enclosure. Loud noises or sudden movements can stress your pet, making them more difficult to handle.
2. Wash your hands: Before handling your bearded dragon, wash your hands with soap and water to remove any oils or chemicals that may harm your pet’s sensitive skin.
3. Create a trust bond: Allow your bearded dragon time to get used to your presence and touch by gently stroking its back or offering treats from your hand, creating a bond of trust between you both.
4. Scoop technique: To hold your bearded dragon for the first time, use the “scoop” technique. Place one hand under its belly and the other hand supporting its tail. This provides optimal support and helps keep it from feeling threatened.
5. Provide support: Gently lift the bearded dragon from the palm of one hand with the other hand supporting its back and hind legs, ensuring that its entire body is properly supported.
6. Hold close to the body: Keep the bearded dragon close to your chest or torso while holding it upright when handling them outside of their enclosure. This helps them feel secure while handling, also preventing falls or injuries.
7. Minimize handling time: Limit handling sessions to 10-15 minutes at a time for adult bearded dragons (even less for young or juvenile dragons). This will help prevent them from becoming stressed or overheated.
8. Return gently: Place your bearded dragon back in its enclosure by slowly lowering it onto a basking spot or hiding place. Give it space and time to settle back into its habitat before re-engaging.
Always remember to monitor your bearded dragon’s body language and behavior when holding them and adjust your handling approach accordingly. Patience, gentleness, and consistency are key in establishing trust with your bearded dragon and ensuring a happy, healthy pet in your care.
