Are you tired of your ill-fitting or too-long skirt? Whether it’s a new garment or one that simply needs an upgrade, a proper hem can give your skirt the perfect fit and length. With a little patience, creativity, and these 15 easy steps, you can hem your skirt and give it an all-new look.
1. Gather necessary supplies: sewing machine or needle, thread, scissors, straight pins, fabric marker or chalk, seam ripper (if needed), iron and ironing board, measuring tape or ruler.
2. Try on the skirt and decide on the desired length by folding the current hem inside to estimate where the new hemline should be. You might need a friend to help with this step.
3. Use the fabric marker or chalk to mark the desired length while wearing the skirt.
4. Take off the skirt and lay it on a flat surface.
5. Use the seam ripper to remove any existing stitches on the original hem if necessary.
6. Measure and note down the distance from the existing hemline to your desired new hemline.
7. Add about one inch (2.54 cm) for seam allowance to your measurement.
8. Using your measuring tape and fabric marker, draw a straight line parallel to the current hemline at your measured distance (desired length plus seam allowance). This will be your cutting line.
9. Cut along the cutting line carefully using sharp scissors.
10. Fold up a 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) seam allowance along the new raw edge and pin it in place using straight pins.
11. Iron along this fold to create a crisp edge that will be easier to sew.
12. Fold another 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) inward so that no raw edges are exposed, pinning it in place around the entire skirt’s circumference.
13. Iron the folded edge again to create a smooth, even hem.
14. Sew the hem in place using either a sewing machine or a needle and thread, removing the pins as you go.
15. Iron the hem one more time for a clean finish, and your skirt is ready to wear.
Following these 15 steps will help you confidently hem your skirt for a more flattering and customized fit. This skill can not only save you money on alterations but also allow you to give new life to garments that no longer fit properly. Soon enough, you’ll become a pro at hemming skirts and other garments!
