When a loved one passes away in the Islamic faith, it is essential to ensure that their funeral and burial are carried out in accordance with Islamic principles. This article will guide you through the steps necessary to hold an Islamic funeral, honoring your loved one’s memory and providing comfort to the grieving family.
1. Immediate care for the deceased
As soon as possible after passing, gently close the deceased’s eyes, cover their body respectfully, and make a silent prayer for them. It is customary to say, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return).
2. Washing the body (Ghusl)
The next step is to cleanse the deceased’s body thoroughly. This ritual purification is known as Ghusl. Family members or close friends are responsible for washing the deceased’s body while ensuring privacy and dignity.
3. Shrouding (Kafan)
Following Ghusl, shroud the deceased’s body in clean white cloth known as Kafan. White symbolizes purity in Islam and is preferred for shrouding purposes. The cloth should be large enough to cover the entire body from head to toe.
4. Funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah)
After preparing the body, gather mourners to conduct Salat al-Janazah – the Islamic funeral prayer. Choose a clean, appropriate location – ideally outdoors – and position the deceased facing Mecca. The congregation should line up in rows behind the body, lead by an Imam or appointed leader who guides them through four Takbirs (the raising of hands) followed by silent prayers.
5. Burial
The burial process within Islam must be performed swiftly – ideally within 24 hours of death – without embalming or cremation. Ensure that the grave-site respects Islamic traditions by orienting it perpendicularly to Mecca. The body should be lowered into the grave on its right side, with the face directed towards Mecca. It is Sunnah (tradition) to use bricks or stones to support the body in this position.
6. Final prayers and condolence visits
After completing the burial, it is customary for friends and family members to provide comfort and condolences to the grieving relatives. This usually takes place at the deceased’s home or a dedicated location. During this time, prayers for the deceased’s soul and patience for their family are highly encouraged.
Understanding and following these steps for an Islamic funeral can help ensure that your loved one’s memory is honored in a respectful and dignified manner. While mourning is natural, remember that Islam encourages patience, hope, and faith in Allah during times of loss.
