How to Get Into Character: 13 Steps
Whether you’re an actor preparing for a role, a cosplayer getting ready for a convention, or someone who simply enjoys stepping into the shoes of different personas, getting into character can be both exciting and challenging. The following 13 steps will guide you on your journey to become another person, even if just for a short time.
1. Understand Your Character: Dive deep into the character’s backstory, their relationships with others, and any important life events that shaped who they are. This knowledge will provide a solid foundation to build upon.
2. Develop a Motivation: Determine what your character wants and why they want it. This is known as the character’s motivation and will drive their actions.
3. Identify Actions and Objectives: Break down your scenes into actions and objectives. What does your character do to achieve their goals? How do they interact with other characters?
4. Analyze Dialogue: Analyze the language your character uses to determine their thoughts and emotions. Their word choice may reveal hidden details about their personality, education, or background.
5. Find Their Physicality: Observe how your character moves in their environment and consider how their emotional state affects their body language.
6. Create a Personal Background: Fill in any gaps in your character’s story by creating additional details about their life experiences that go beyond provided script or text.
7. Develop Relationships: Explore your character’s relationships with other characters in the story as well as connections to people from their past.
8. Memorize Lines but Stay Open: Learn your dialogue inside-out to give yourself freedom on stage or camera but remain open to new discoveries during rehearsals or performances.
9. Experiment with Voices and Accents: Play around with different ways of speaking that reflect your character’s upbringing, profession, or social status.
10. Embrace Wardrobe and Props: Use costumes, clothing, makeup, and props to physically embody character, finding nuances and details that help you become your character.
11. Establish a Routine or Ritual: Create a routine or ritual to signal the shift from yourself to your character, such as breathing exercises or listening to specific music.
12. Use Imagination and Empathy: Put yourself in your character’s shoes and imagine their emotions and thoughts. How do they experience their world?
13. Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you rehearse and perform your character, the more natural it will feel. Take time to explore different facets of your character in various situations.
Getting into character is an ongoing process that requires patience and dedication. As you follow these steps, remember that the journey itself can be just as rewarding as reaching your destination – a fully-realized character that lives and breathes on stage or screen.
