How to Frame a Jersey: 8 Steps
Framing a jersey is an excellent way to showcase and preserve a special piece of sports memorabilia. Whether it’s your own game-worn jersey, a signed collectible, or an old favorite gathering dust in the closet, proper framing can turn it into a fantastic focal point on your wall. Here are 8 steps to help you frame your prized jersey.
1. Gather necessary materials: You’ll need a shadowbox frame that’s large enough for your jersey, acid-free foam board, fabric or matting for the background, clear acrylic or glass glazing, pins or clips to hold the jersey in place, and any additional items to display like photos or plaques.
2. Choose the right frame: Select a shadowbox frame that offers at least one inch of depth to accommodate the thickness of the jersey. The size of the frame should also allow enough room for your jersey to be displayed without folding or bunching.
3. Prepare the background: Cut your acid-free foam board to fit the inside dimensions of your frame. Then choose a fabric color that complements your jersey and cut it slightly larger than the foam board. Attach the fabric onto the foam board by wrapping it tightly around the edges and securing it with adhesive or strong tape on the backside.
4. Position the jersey: Lay your jersey out flat on top of the prepared background and determine how you want it displayed—this could be with sleeves stretched out, tucked in, or even folded for smaller frames. Adjust until you’re happy with how it looks.
5. Secure the jersey: Once you have found your desired position, pin or clip your jersey in place securely without damaging it. Use strong pins like stainless steel T-pins or clear plastic clips that won’t leave marks on your jersey while providing enough support to keep it in place.
6. Add embellishments (optional): If you wish to include additional memorabilia like photos, signatures, or plaques, position and secure them onto the foam board around the jersey. Ensure they don’t overshadow or take attention away from your main piece.
7. Assemble the frame: With your jersey and any additional items secured, place the clear acrylic or glass glazing onto your frame. Then carefully place the foam board into the frame, making sure it fits snugly against the glazing without damaging the jersey. Finally, add the backer board and secure it in place with clips or provided hardware.
8. Hang your masterpiece: After double-checking that everything is secured within the frame, choose a spot on your wall and use appropriate hardware to mount it safely based on its weight and size. Stand back and admire your beautifully framed jersey.
By following these 8 steps, you’ll not only have a fantastic display piece but also protect your cherished jersey from dust, light damage, and wear—ensuring it remains a treasured keepsake for years to come.
