A new door handle can greatly enhance the appearance of your door and provide a fresh look to any room. Fitting a door handle may seem daunting, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, it’s a straightforward task that can be accomplished by following these 12 steps.
1. Gather your tools: For this task, you’ll need a screwdriver, drill, pencil, tape measure, chisel, hammer, and the door handle set with screws.
2. Choose the style: Select a suitable door handle design that complements the overall aesthetics of your room.
3. Remove the old door handle: Unscrew the old door handles from the spindle and remove any remaining screws or plates.
4. Measure and mark: Decide on the height of the new handle by using a tape measure for accurate positioning. Mark it with a pencil on both sides of the door. A common height is usually around 36 inches from the bottom of the door.
5. Create pilot holes: Drill small pilot holes at your marked positions on both sides of the door to prevent splitting when attaching your new handles.
6. Chisel out recesses: If necessary, use a chisel and hammer to create recesses for the latch plate and handle plate so they sit flush with the surface of the door.
7. Install the latch assembly: Insert the latch assembly into its designated hole in the edge of your door, making sure it’s aligned correctly. Screw it in place with your screwdriver.
8. Attach spindle to one handle: Take one half of your new spindle (the metal rod that connects both handles) and attach it to one of your new handles as per manufacturer instructions.
9. Align first handle to latch: Holding onto your assembled spindle and handle, insert it through the latch mechanism at an angle so its end emerges on other side of hole.
10. Align second handle: Pass the second handle onto the protruding end of the spindle, then align before tightening both handles so they feel secure and can turn smoothly.
11. Secure both handles: Once aligned correctly, use your screwdriver to fasten the screws that anchor your handles to the door.
12. Test your new door handle: After securing the handles in place, test their function by turning them to ensure proper operation and smooth movement of the latch. The door should open and close without any issues.
Congratulations! You’ve now successfully fitted a door handle. With your new handles in place, you’ve not only enhanced the appearance of your door but also improved its functionality.
