How to Finger Knit a Blanket
Finger knitting is a fun and easy process that allows you to create beautifully crafted blankets without the need for traditional knitting needles. It’s an excellent activity to engage your creativity, relieve stress, and end up with a cozy, functional product. In this article, we will guide you through the process of finger knitting a blanket, perfect for beginners.
Materials Needed:
1. Yarn – bulky or super bulky weight is recommended for a thicker and warmer blanket
2. Scissors
3. A tapestry needle (optional, but helpful to weave in ends)
Step 1: Make a slipknot
Create a slipknot by making a loop with the yarn, pulling another loop through the first loop, and then tightening. This knot will be placed on your index finger.
Step 2: Begin casting on
With the slipknot on your index finger, hold the working yarn (the yarn connected to the ball) in your palm with your other fingers. Weave the working yarn over your middle finger, under your ring finger, and then over your pinky.
Step 3: Continue casting on
Bring the working yarn back around your pinky and weave it under your ring finger, over your middle finger, under your index finger. Repeat this process until you have cast on the desired number of stitches for the width of your blanket.
Step 4: Start knitting
Take the working yarn and weave it over-under-over-under across your fingers again. Starting with your pinky finger, lift the bottom loop over the top loop and off your finger. Continue this with each finger until you’ve knit one row.
Step 5: Keep knitting rows
Continue weaving the working yarn across your fingers and lifting off loops until you’ve reached the desired length for your blanket.
Step 6: Bind off
When you’re happy with your blanket’s length, it’s time to bind off. Begin by lifting the loop from your pinky and placing it on your ring finger. Then, lift the bottom loop on the ring finger over the top loop and off the finger. Move the remaining loop from the ring finger to your middle finger, repeating this process until only one loop remains on your index finger.
Step 7: Finish the blanket
Cut the working yarn, leaving a tail about 6-8 inches long. Lift the final loop off your finger and pull the tail through that loop. Tighten it to create a knot. Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully completed a finger-knit blanket. Now you can start exploring different patterns and textures or create cozy gifts for friends and family. The possibilities are endless!
