How to Dry Apples
Dried apples are a delicious and healthy snack, packed with natural flavors and nutrients that can be enjoyed year-round. They are perfect for taking on hiking trips, adding to your breakfast bowl, or simply snacking throughout the day. In this article, we will outline the steps to drying apples at home, ensuring you can savor these tasty treats whenever you desire.
1. Gather your ingredients and tools:
To dry apples, you will need:
– Fresh apples (the number depends on how many you’d like to dry)
– A knife
– A cutting board
– A large mixing bowl
– A baking sheet or dehydrator trays
– Parchment paper or silicone baking mats
2. Prepare the apples:
Begin by washing your apples thoroughly. Next, remove the core of each apple using an apple corer or a paring knife. Slice the apples into even slices, no more than 1/4 inch thick. The thinner the slices, the faster they will dry.
3. Optional: Prevent browning:
To keep your dried apples from turning brown, prepare a solution of one part lemon juice to four parts water in a large mixing bowl. Submerge the apple slices in this mixture for a few minutes before draining them well.
4. Arrange the apple slices:
Preheat your oven to 140°F (60°C) if using a conventional oven. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mats, ensuring there is minimal overlap. Arrange the apple slices on the prepared sheets in a single layer, leaving some space between them for air circulation.
5. Dehydrate your apples:
For oven drying – Place the baking sheets in the preheated oven and allow the apples to dry for about six to eight hours, flipping them over halfway through and rotating your trays for even drying.
For food dehydrator – Set your dehydrator to 135°F (57°C) and dehydrate the apples for six to eight hours, checking periodically to ensure even drying.
6. Check for dryness:
The key is to look for the apple slices to be flexible but leathery. They shouldn’t snap apart, but you should be able to bend them without them sticking together. The drying time can vary depending on your oven or dehydrator and the thickness of the slices, so keep an eye on them.
7. Cool and store:
Remove the apple slices from the oven or dehydrator and let them cool completely before storing them in an airtight container or ziplock bag. They can be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks, refrigerated for a couple of months, or frozen for up to six months.
With these simple steps, you can easily create your own dried apples at home and enjoy a nutritious and delightful snack any time you want.
