Drilling a lock can be a crucial skill to have in certain situations, such as when you’ve lost your keys, or a lock is damaged and must be removed. Keep in mind that drilling a lock will render it useless and unusable for the future. Therefore, use this method only as a last resort.
Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools
You will need the following tools to drill a lock:
– A power drill
– A drill bit (sized between 1/8″ and 1/4″)
– An appropriate-sized screwdriver
– Lubricant
– Safety glasses
Step 2: Choose the Right Drill Bit
Select a high-speed or carbide-tipped drill bit sized between 1/8″ and 1/4″. Make sure the bit is sharp enough.
Step 3: Locate the Shear Line
The shear line is an imaginary line running between the inner and outer cylinders of the lock. It’s where the pins are located that keep the lock from turning. You’ll be drilling through this area.
Step 4: Create a Starting Point
Apply some lubricant to the drill bit and place it at the right angle on the keyhole, slightly above where you estimate the shear line would be. Push slightly into the key pin chamber until there’s an indentation for steady drilling.
Step 5: Begin Drilling
Insert the drill bit into your power drill and align it with your starting point. Wearing safety glasses, begin drilling slowly while applying steady pressure until it reaches through the lock cylinder.
Step 6: Pause and Check Progress
Stop drilling periodically to remove any debris created by drilling, preventing overheating of your drill bit. Reapply lubricant as necessary.
Step 7: Be Mindful of Pin Locations
As you’re drilling, pay attention for breaks in resistance – these are individual pin chambers you’re navigating through. Proceed slowly and carefully to align the bit to not break it.
Step 8: Reach the End of the Lock
Continue drilling until you reach the other side of the lock cylinder. At this point, the internal mechanisms should be destroyed.
Step 9: Remove the Lock
With a flat-head screwdriver, insert it into the drilled hole and turn it as if you were using a key. This will force the deadbolt or latch to release, allowing you to remove the lock.
Remember, drilling a lock should always be a last resort when other methods of entry are unattainable. By following these nine steps, however, you will be prepared to tackle this task safely and effectively.
