Step 1: Gather your drawing materials
Before you start, make sure you have a pencil, eraser, and some paper. You can also use different pencils for shading or a black pen for outlining if you prefer.
Step 2: Draw a circle for the head
Start by drawing a circle about the size you want Jack Skellington’s head to be. This will be the base for his skull-like face.
Step 3: Add guidelines
Draw a vertical line through the center of the circle and a horizontal line across the middle. These guidelines will help you position his facial features later.
Step 4: Sketch the shape of his eyes
On either side of the vertical guideline, draw two large oval shapes for Jack’s eyes. Remember that his eyes have an exaggerated and expressive shape.
Step 5: Add depth to the eyes
Draw two curved lines within each eye to create depth. The inner lines should be thicker and more prominent than the outer ones to give his eyes a hollow appearance.
Step 6: Draw his expressive eyebrows
Jack has very expressive eyebrows that resemble two long, thin crescents above his eye sockets. Sketch these arcs above each eye, making them slightly thicker towards their outer ends.
Step 7: Draw Jack’s nose
Jack’s nose is comprised of two small nostril slits in the center of his face. Position them just above the horizontal guideline and just below where his eyebrows meet in the middle.
Step 8: Sketch his smile
Jack Skellington is known for his wide, sinister grin. Starting from one side of his face, draw a long, curved line that passes under his nose and extends to the other side. Another curved line should be drawn below it to create an open-mouth smile effect.
Step 9: Add teeth to the smile
Draw small vertical lines along both of the curved lines you drew in step 8. Ensure that they are evenly spaced and vary slightly in length to create an eerie effect.
Step 10: Refine the details and add shading
Go back over your drawing, erase any unnecessary guidelines, and refine your lines. Add some shading around his eye sockets, under his eyebrows, and around his smile to emphasize his skeletal appearance.
Step 11: Finish with outlining and additional details
If you want a more polished look, outline your drawing with a black pen or a darker pencil. You can also add any final touches or details you think will enhance your drawing of Jack Skellington.
Congratulations! You’ve now successfully drawn Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in just 11 steps. Happy drawing!
