Step 1: Preparing the basic shape
Start by drawing a large square-shaped head. It is essential to have a proper sketch of the head because it will act as the foundation for the remaining details. Inside the square head, draw two intersecting lines; one horizontal and one vertical. This will help you position Carl’s facial features.
Step 2: Creating Carl’s face
Draw two big oval-shaped eyes on the horizontal line, starting near the vertical line, and spaced apart slightly. In each eye, draw a small circle (slightly off-center) for pupils. Underneath each eye, draw curved lines to represent Carl’s wrinkles. Below the horizontal line, draw his round nose and a grouchy-looking frown.
Step 3: Adding hair and eyebrows
Carl has bushy eyebrows and curvy white hair. To create these features, draw thick, wavy lines right above each of his eyes for his eyebrows, and extend them toward the center of his forehead. For his hair, draw curly lines cascading down from both sides of his eyebrows to form a big M-shape contour on his forehead.
Step 4: Drawing glasses
Connect those bushy eyebrows with a straight half-rectangular shape to create the bridge of his glasses. Now extend half-oval shapes below this bridge along each side to form Carl’s large glasses’ frame.
Step 5: Sketching the collar and neck
Draw a vertical rectangular shape under Carl’s head for his neck, then extend two horizontal lines outwards from the lower part of this rectangle for collar creases. This forms part of uniting Carl’s head with his body.
Step 6: Adding body and arms
For Carl’s body, draw a rounded rectangle with its upper width slightly smaller than its bottom width representing his torso. Next, sketch out two simple limb-like shapes from the shoulder area down, incorporating rounded rectangles for his arms.
Step 7: Finishing the attire
Draw two horizontal lines on each arm to indicate the cuffs of Carl’s shirt sleeves. Add buttons and shirt details to the front part of his rounded-rectangle-shaped torso. For his lower body, sketch a simple upside-down V shape beneath the torso to represent his pants, and extend two straight lines downward for legs.
Step 8: Final touches and inking
After completing all your sketch lines, review your drawing and add in any final details you may have missed. Once you are satisfied with your sketch, start inking over the pencil lines with a fine liner or ink pen. After the ink dries, carefully erase any remaining pencil marks.
Congratulations! You have now successfully drawn Carl from Up. Feel free to practice more or even color your drawing to bring it to life.
