Drawing a cartoon cat can be a fun and enjoyable process with the right approach. In this article, we will guide you through the steps of creating your very own cartoon cat character—it’s easier than you may think! Just follow these simple step-by-step instructions, and soon you will have an adorable cartoon cat to show off to your friends.
Step 1: Start with the head
Begin by drawing a large circle for the cat’s head. The size of the circle will determine how big your cartoon cat will be, so adjust it accordingly. This circle will serve as the base for your cat’s facial features.
Step 2: Draw the cat’s ears
Two triangle shapes on top of the circle will form the ears of your cartoon cat. Make sure they are evenly spaced on either side of the topmost part of the circle and are not too big or small.
Step 3: Sketch out the eyes
Now that we have our basic head shape and ears, it’s time to draw in the eyes. Create two oval shapes within the boundaries of the circle, keeping them widely spaced apart. Fill in these ovals with circles that will act as pupils, leaving white spaces for highlights if desired.
Step 4: Add the nose, mouth, and whiskers
Right below the eyes, draw a small upside-down triangle for your kitty’s nose. Then, sketch out an inverted “Y” shape extending downward from there to form its mouth. Don’t forget those whiskers! Add three lines on either side of your cat’s face to represent its whiskers – make sure they’re long and curved slightly.
Step 5: Create your cat’s body
For the body, draw a rounded rectangle shape that is narrower at the top and wider towards the bottom. Keep in mind that this is a cartoon-style drawing so no need to stress overperfect proportions.
Step 6: Add the legs and tail
Starting at the bottom corners of the body, add two rounded shapes for your cat’s front legs. Make sure you taper them slightly as they approach the bottom. Now, add two smaller, similar shapes in the background for rear legs to create depth
For the tail, draw a long, curved line extending from the back of your cat’s body, with another line parallel to it to thicken it. You can have the tail curl up or down depending on your preference.
Step 7: Put in details
Add any desired markings, such as stripes or spots, to your cat’s body and face. Also, don’t forget that you can accessorize your cartoon cat with collars, bows, or even clothing to give it some personality!
Step 8: Outlining and coloring
Once you’re satisfied with your drawing, go over the lines with a darker pen or pencil to make them stand out more. Finally, color your cartoon cat using colored pencils, markers, or even digital tools if you prefer!
That’s it! With these simple steps and a little practice, you’ll soon master the art of drawing cartoon cats. Be creative and have fun experimenting with different styles and colors to bring your feline friends to life!
