How to Drain a Toilet: 9 Steps
Whether you’re replacing your toilet, fixing a leak, or doing some DIY bathroom renovations, draining your toilet is a necessary step to take on your new project. It might seem intimidating at first, but draining a toilet is a simple and straightforward process anyone can do with the right tools and steps. Here are 9 steps to help you drain your toilet like a pro.
1. Gather necessary supplies: You’ll need rubber gloves, a bucket, an old towel or sponge, pliers or an adjustable wrench, and a cup or small container.
2. Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet near the floor. Turn it clockwise until it stops to cut off the water supply to the toilet.
3. Flush the toilet: With the water supply turned off, flush the toilet several times to remove as much water as possible from the tank and bowl.
4. Remove remaining water from the tank: Put on your rubber gloves to protect your hands from any bacteria. Using a cup or small container, scoop out any remaining water from the bottom of the tank into a bucket.
5. Absorb excess water in the bowl: Place an old towel or sponge into the bottom of the toilet bowl to absorb any remaining water. Wring out excess water into the bucket as needed.
6. Block sewer gases: Stuff a wet rag into the bottom hole of the bowl to block sewer gases from escaping while you work.
7. Disconnect the water supply line: Using pliers or an adjustable wrench, disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank.
8. Remove all remaining bolts: While holding one bolt inside the tank’s base with pliers or an adjustable wrench, unscrew the corresponding nut underneath with another set of pliers or wrench until it’s removed completely. Do this for all bolts remaining in place.
9. Lift and remove: Once all remaining bolts and the water supply line have been removed, gently lift the toilet bowl upward with a straight vertical motion, taking care not to damage the floor. Congratulations, you’ve successfully drained your toilet!
Now that your toilet is drained, you’re ready to move on to your next project. Just remember to follow these steps carefully and ask for help if you feel unsure. Good luck!
