How to Downgrade iOS: 13 Steps
In some cases, users may find it necessary to downgrade their iOS version due to software issues, app compatibility, or personal preference. This article will guide you through the 13 steps to downgrade your iOS, helping ensure a smoother experience.
Step 1: Check for Compatibility
Before attempting a downgrade, ensure your device is compatible with the iOS version you want to install. The older the version you’re attempting to downgrade to, the less likely it is to be compatible with newer devices.
Step 2: Backup Your Data
Prior to downgrading, make sure you backup all essential data on your device using iCloud or iTunes. This is crucial because downgrading might result in data loss.
Step 3: Download the Desired iOS Firmware
To successfully downgrade your iOS, download the desired firmware (IPSW) file from a reputable source. Ensure the file matches your specific device model.
Step 4: Disable ‘Find My iPhone’
Go to Settings > Apple ID > Find My > Find My iPhone and toggle off the feature, entering your Apple ID password when prompted.
Step 5: Connect Your Device to Computer
Using an appropriate cable, connect your iPhone or iPad to a computer that has iTunes installed.
Step 6: Enter Recovery Mode
To enter recovery mode on your device, follow these steps based on your device type – iPhone 8 or newer: Press and quickly release the volume up button, followed by volume down button. Press and hold the side button until the recovery mode screen appears.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold both the side button and volume down buttons simultaneously until recovery mode appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier models: Hold down both home and side buttons until recovery mode shows up.
Step 7: Launch iTunes
If it doesn’t open automatically, launch iTunes manually.
Step 8: Select Your Device in iTunes
In the upper-left corner of the iTunes window, click on the device icon to select your iPhone or iPad.
Step 9: Choose ‘Restore iPhone’
Hold down the ‘Option’ key (Mac) or ‘Shift’ key (Windows) while clicking on ‘Restore iPhone’ within iTunes.
Step 10: Locate the IPSW File
Navigate to the downloaded IPSW firmware file in the newly appeared window and select it.
Step 11: Confirm iOS Downgrade
Click ‘Restore’ when prompted by iTunes to confirm the downgrade process. iTunes will now begin downgrading your iOS version.
Step 12: Wait for the Process to Complete
Do not disconnect your device during this process. Once completed, your device will restart, and you’ll see a “Welcome” screen.
Step 13: Restore Data from Backup
Finally, set up your device and restore your data from iCloud or iTunes backup.
Please note that downgrading iOS is not officially supported by Apple, and doing so carries certain risks. Make sure to proceed with caution and follow these steps carefully to avoid potential issues.
