The pullover is a fundamental gymnastics skill that is executed on bars, such as the uneven bars or the horizontal (high) bar. The move involves swinging your body over the bar and into a front support position. While it can be challenging for beginners, mastering the pullover is an essential stepping stone for more advanced gymnastics skills. By following these 11 steps, you can learn how to do a pullover on bars.
1. Warm-up: As with any exercise, it is important to warm-up your muscles before attempting a pullover. Stretch and perform cardio exercises like jumping jacks or high knees for at least 10 minutes.
2. Chalk your hands: Chalk helps improve grip and reduce slipping. Coat your hands in chalk before gripping the bar.
3. Grip the bar: Stand facing the bar and jump up to grab it with an overhand grip (palms facing away from you), with your hands placed shoulder-width apart.
4. Hang straight down: Allow your body to hang in a straight vertical position beneath the bar, arms fully extended.
5. Engage core muscles: Tighten your stomach muscles as you prepare to kick up and swing your legs.
6. Kick up: Raise both legs simultaneously by kicking upward and bending your knees, while keeping your core engaged.
7. Bring hips to the bar: As you kick upward, use momentum to swing your hips toward the bar while maintaining our grip.
8. Push down on the bar: When your hips are close to the bar, create tension in your arms by pushing down on the bar while pulling your chest upward towards it in a circular motion.
9. Rotate around the bar: As you push down on the bar and lift your chest, use momentum to rotate over the top of it. Keep pulling until your waistline fully passes over.
10. Straighten out into front support: After your hips clear the bar, extend your legs and position your body in a straight line parallel to the ground (front support). Ensure your wrists are turned inward, and arms are straight.
11. Lower down: To dismount from the bar, gently lower yourself back into a hanging position and release your grip.
Practicing these 11 steps regularly will help you develop the strength and technique needed to master the pullover on bars. Be patient with your progress – as with any gymnastics skill, it takes time and persistence to perfect. Happy practicing!
