How to Disassemble an AK-47: 9 Steps
The AK-47 is a renowned rifle known for its durability and reliability. Despite its sturdy design, regular maintenance is essential to ensure the firearm functions optimally. Properly disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the weapon will help maintain its longevity. Here are nine easy steps detailing how to disassemble an AK-47:
1. Ensure Safety:
First and foremost, make sure the rifle is unloaded and clear of any ammunition. Remove the magazine and check the chamber to confirm that no rounds are present.
2. Remove Dust Cover:
Press the recoil spring assembly button located at the rear of the dust cover. Next, lift the rear of the dust cover upward and pull it off the rifle.
3. Remove Recoil Spring Assembly:
With the dust cover removed, firmly hold onto the recoil spring assembly and push it forward, then ease it back to remove it from its position.
4. Remove Bolt Carrier Group (BCG):
To remove the BCG, slide it rearward along with the piston and slowly pull both from their place inside the gas tube.
5. Remove Gas Tube:
To detach the gas tube, lift up on the gas tube release lever located on the right side of sight block. Rotate it approximately 90 degrees counterclockwise; this will unlock it. You may now gently separate and remove the gas tube from the front trunnion.
6. Disassemble Bolt Carrier Group:
Rotate and pull out the bolt from its carrier slot by grabbing on to its bolt handle (rectangular protrusion). This allows you to clean both components thoroughly.
7. Detach Lower Handguard:
Release the lower handguard by pushing down on its retention clip found near its rear section adjacent to receiver stubs. Slide off this rearmost part of your lower handguard now free of restraint by moving forward on fingertips as you press towards the ground.
8. Remove Cleaning Rod (optional):
If you want to remove the cleaning rod, unscrew it from inside the barrel and pull it out carefully.
9. Disassemble Trigger Mechanism (optional):
Although this step is optional, it’s essential if you’re planning deep maintenance or modification work on your rifle. Remove the safety selector lever, followed by punch pins holding in place both trigger and hammer, as well as eliminate any additional retaining parts holding components together.
With the AK-47 now disassembled, you can clean and inspect all of its individual components. For reassembling, reverse the steps above. Following these guidelines will ensure your AK-47 continues to operate safely and efficiently for years to come.
