How to Disable or Turn Off the GeForce Overlay on Windows
The GeForce Overlay is a feature in NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience software that allows gamers to access various key functions without leaving their game. Some of the functions accessible through the overlay are sharing game highlights, recording gameplay, and adjusting graphics settings.
While the overlay is undoubtedly handy, there may be scenarios where you would want to disable it. For instance, the overlay can cause problems with certain games or cause performance issues on underpowered machines. In this article, we’ll guide you on how to disable or turn off the GeForce overlay on Windows.
Method 1: Disabling the Overlay Through NVIDIA Settings
The first method for disabling the overlay is through the NVIDIA settings. Follow the steps below:
Step 1: Open the GeForce Experience software on your PC (make sure your system has NVIDIA graphics card installed).
Step 2: Click the Settings (gear) icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
Step 3: Navigate to the ‘General’ tab and toggle off the ‘In-Game Overlay’ option to disable the function completely.
Note that disabling the overlay function via these settings will also turn off other overlay features, including ShadowPlay, broadcasting, and instant replay.
Method 2: Disabling the Overlay for Specific Games
If you still want to use the overlay feature on some games and not on others, you can select which games you want the overlay to appear for. Here’s how:
Step 1: Open the GeForce Experience software and click the Settings (gear) icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
Step 2: Navigate to the ‘Games’ tab.
Step 3: Select the specific game you want to disable the overlay for and click on it.
Step 4: Toggle off the ‘In-Game Overlay’ option.
Note that if the ‘In-Game Overlay’ option is turned off for individual games, NVIDIA’s ShadowPlay feature will still work on some games.
Method 3: Removing the Overlay Shortcut Key
You can only access the overlay through a shortcut key. If you remap or disable the shortcut for accessing the overlay, you will then disable the overlay’s feature. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open the GeForce Experience software and click the Settings (gear) icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
Step 2: Navigate to the ‘Keyboard Shortcuts’ tab.
Step 3: Locate the keyboard shortcut assigned to the In-Game Overlay function.
Step 4: Click on the assigned keyboard shortcut and either remap or disable it.
With the keyboard shortcut disabled or remapped, you won’t trigger the overlay when you press it.
