How to De-ice Your Windshield: 10 Steps
Winter brings beautiful snowfall, cozy nights, hot cocoa, and—unfortunately—icy windshields. When the temperature drops and frosty weather takes over, de-icing your windshield becomes a crucial part of your morning routine. Planning ahead and using effective techniques can make this task easier and quicker. Here are 10 steps to help you efficiently de-ice your windshield:
1. Start early: Give yourself extra time before your departure to properly de-ice your windshield without feeling rushed.
2. Warm up your car: Turn on your vehicle’s defrost setting and set it to a high temperature for a few minutes to warm up the car’s interior. Be sure to never leave your running car unattended.
3. Use an ice scraper: A plastic ice scraper is a must-have tool for windy winters. Scrape the ice off in layers, moving from top to bottom across the windshield.
4. Apply store-bought de-icer: You can buy a commercial de-icing spray at any auto parts store if you’re planning ahead. Spray it onto the windshield and watch as it dissolves the ice.
5. Make a homemade de-icer solution: If you don’t have a commercial de-icer handy, you can mix ⅓ part water and ⅔ part rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray this mixture onto your windshield to melt the ice.
6. Use a snow brush or broom: Remove excess snow from atop the ice by using a snow brush or broom specifically designed for vehicle use.
7. Warm up some water: Fill a container with lukewarm (not boiling) water and slowly pour it over your windshield, starting at the top, allowing the water to work its way down.
8. Don’t use metal scrapers: Metal tools like spatulas or knives can cause damage to your windshield. Stick to plastic scrapers designed for automotive application.
9. Turn on your wipers: Once the ice is mostly removed, use your windshield wipers along with a proper amount of windshield antifreeze (summer fluid isn’t as effective) to help clear any remaining slush or ice.
10. Protect your windshield: To avoid the hassle of de-icing an icy windshield, invest in a frost-guard windshield cover, or park in a garage or under shelter when possible.
By following these steps, you’ll quickly conquer that frozen windshield and be ready to hit the road safely and efficiently.
