How to Cut Fabric
Cutting fabric may seem like a basic task, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Proper fabric cutting requires precision and attention to detail, ensuring that your sewing projects look professional and well-made. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps on how to cut fabric accurately and efficiently.
1. Gather necessary supplies
Before starting, assemble the following tools:
– A large, flat surface for cutting
– Rotary cutter or sharp fabric scissors
– Straight pins or pattern weights
– Clear acrylic ruler or measuring tape
– Self-healing cutting mat (for use with a rotary cutter)
– Your chosen fabric
2. Prewash and press your fabric
It’s crucial to wash and dry your fabric beforehand, as some materials shrink or change texture after washing. After prewashing, press your fabric using an iron to remove any creases or wrinkles that may cause inaccuracies during cutting.
3. Align your fabric
Lay your fabric on the flat surface with the right side (the side with the pattern or desired outward-facing color) facing down. Make sure all edges are straight by aligning them with the gridlines of your self-healing cutting mat or the edge of your table.
If your fabric has a directional print, double-check that the print is correctly oriented before beginning to cut.
4. Fold fabric if needed
To make cutting more manageable and efficient, you can fold your fabric in half, lengthwise (from selvage to selvage). Ensure that the edges are perfectly aligned and that there are no wrinkles or bubbles in the folded fabric.
5. Secure your pattern or measurements
Using straight pins or pattern weights, secure your chosen pattern pieces onto your fabric, ensuring they are correctly aligned with grain lines and any other directional markings. If you’re using measurements instead of a pattern, use a clear acrylic ruler or measuring tape to mark your cutting lines with an erasable fabric marker or tailor’s chalk.
6. Cut your fabric
With your pattern or measurements secured, begin to cut through the fabric. If using fabric scissors, use long, smooth strokes and keep the bottom blade against the table or cutting mat for better control. If using a rotary cutter, press down firmly and follow the edge of your ruler as a guide.
When cutting curves, use short, careful snips with your scissors, or maneuver your rotary cutter slowly and steadily around the shape.
7. Be mindful of the grain
When cutting fabric, always consider its grain (the direction of the fibers). Ideally, cut parallel or perpendicular to the selvage edge to maintain structural integrity and prevent distortion in your finished project.
8. Clean up and label
After cutting all necessary pieces, remove any stray threads and label each piece before storing so that you can easily identify them when assembling your pr
By following these steps, you’ll have mastered the art of accurately cutting fabric for any sewing project. With practice and precision, you’ll find that cutting fabric becomes second nature in no time. Happy sewing!
