How to Cut a Dress Pattern: 7 Steps
Cutting a dress pattern can seem daunting, especially for beginners, but with the right guidance and perseverance, you can create your own clothing with ease. In this article, we’ll teach you how to cut a dress pattern using a sewing pattern in just seven simple steps.
1. Gather your materials: Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary materials: the sewing pattern, dress fabric, fabric scissors or rotary cutter, sewing pins, tailor’s chalk or washable fabric pen, measuring tape, a ruler or L-square for straight lines, and an iron.
2. Prepare your fabric: Prewash and dry your fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent any future shrinkage. Iron your fabric to remove any wrinkles that may have formed during washing.
3. Trace and cut out your pattern pieces: Start by studying the instructions provided with your pattern. Lay out the individual pattern pieces on a flat surface and carefully cut around each one using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
4. Choose grainline and fold line placement: The grainline is marked on your pattern pieces by a long arrow; this arrow should run parallel to the selvage (the finished edge) of the fabric. Fold lines are usually indicated by dashed lines on the pattern and must align with how the fabric is folded.
5. Pinning your pattern pieces onto the fabric: Lay out your fabric on a flat surface with the right side facing up. Gently fold your fabric in half along its length so that both selvages meet (for most patterns). Arrange your pattern pieces onto the folded fabric so that their grainline arrows run parallel to the selvage. Pin them down using sewing pins, leaving enough space between each piece for seam allowances.
6. Mark notches and transfer markings: Notches are small angular cuts on the pattern edges that help align different parts of the garment during sewing. Use tailor’s chalk or a washable fabric pen to make a small mark (or cut into the seam allowance) on the fabric at each notch location. Additionally, any other pattern markings (like darts, pleats, or points of attachment) need to be transferred to the fabric.
7. Cut your fabric pieces: Carefully cut around each pattern piece using sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. Try to avoid lifting the fabric as you cut to maintain accuracy. Once all pieces are cut out, remove pins and store them safely along with the pattern pieces.
With these seven steps, you now have your dress pattern cut and ready for assembly! Good luck and happy sewing!
