How to Crochet a Toy Hammock
A toy hammock is an excellent addition to any child’s room, providing a creative way to store and display their favorite stuffed animals and toys. Crocheting a toy hammock on your own allows you to customize it according to your room’s color scheme and style. In this article, we will walk you through the steps on how to crochet a simple yet stylish toy hammock.
Materials Needed:
– Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook
– Worsted weight yarn (approximately 250 yards)
– Scissors
– Tapestry needle
– Safety pins or stitch markers
– Measuring tape
– Hooks or fasteners for hanging the hammock
Step 1: Create a slipknot and foundation chain
Begin by making a slipknot with your chosen yarn. Then, chain 60 stitches to create the foundation chain for the toy hammock. Adjust the number of chains if necessary, depending on your desired width.
Step 2: First row and stitch pattern
For the first row, create a double crochet stitch in the fourth chain from your hook (these first three skipped chains will count as one double crochet). Continue double crocheting all the way along the chain until you reach the end of the row. Chain three and turn your work.
Now we’ll establish our stitch pattern for the rest of the hammock. Row 2 forward will consist of alternating two double crochet stitches followed by two chain stitches:
Row 2: *2 double crochet, chain 2* repeat across, ending with one double crochet in last stitch.
Row 3 and beyond: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), *2 double crochet in chain space, then chain 2* repeat across, ending with a double crochet in last stitch.
Repeat these stitch patterns until your hammock reaches your desired length. Make sure it’s long enough to hold several toys comfortably.
Step 3: Secure and weave in ends
When you have reached your desired length, cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook to fasten off securely. Use your tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends.
Step 4: Attach loops for hanging
Create four hanging loops at each corner of the hammock by attaching yarn using a slip stitch, chaining approximately 15-20 chains depending on the desired loop size, and slip stitching back into the same corner. Repeat this process for all corners. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 5: Install hooks and hang your toy hammock
Measure and mark where you want to hang the hammock on your wall or ceiling. Install hooks or fasteners based on manufacturer’s instructions. Hang your crochet toy hammock by attaching the loops to the hooks.
That’s it – you have now successfully created a functional and stylish crochet toy hammock! Fill it with your child’s favorite stuffed animals and enjoy watching their room transform into an organized and playful space.
