How to Cook a Ham: 14 Steps
Step 1: Choose Your Ham
Select a high-quality ham from your local grocery store or butcher. Hams can be classified into fresh, country, and city hams. Ensure you get the right type based on your preference.
Step 2: Thaw the Ham
If your ham is frozen, allow it to thaw in the fridge for about 24-48 hours before you plan to cook it.
Step 3: Preheat Your Oven
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) for slow roasting your ham.
Step 4: Remove Excess Fat
Trim any excess fat from the ham, but be sure to leave about a quarter-inch layer of fat to keep it moist during the cooking process.
Step 5: Place the Ham in a Roasting Pan
Place the ham, fat side up, in a roasting pan with a rack. This will allow the drippings to collect at the bottom and prevent the ham from getting soggy.

Step 7: Add Seasonings
Rub your chosen seasonings (sugar, honey, mustard, etc.) all over the surface of the scored ham.
Step 8: Add Liquid
Pour about half an inch of liquid (water, broth, or juice) into the roasting pan. This helps keep the ham moist during cooking.
Step 9: Cover with Foil
Cover your ham with aluminum foil to prevent it from drying out in the oven.
Step 10: Calculate Cooking Time
Calculate cooking time based on weight. Allow about 20 minutes per pound for fully cooked hams and about 30 minutes per pound for partially cooked or uncooked hams.
Step 11: Start Roasting
Place the roasting pan with the ham in the oven and start following your calculated cooking time.
Step 12: Baste the Ham
Remove the foil and baste the ham with its juices every 30 minutes. This keeps it moist and flavorful.
Step 13: Glaze the Ham
About 20 minutes before the end of the cooking time, apply your chosen glaze (maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey) to the surface of the ham and return it to the oven uncovered for a caramelized finish.
Step 14: Rest, Slice, and Serve
